Workers reject sachet alcohol ban, plan nationwide protest

    0

Employees of companies producing sachet alcohol, alongside some civil society organisations, have hinted at the possibility of a nationwide protest if the ban on sachet alcohol beverages and PET bottles below 200ml is not reversed.

The employees made this known on Monday when they stormed the Lagos office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway to protest the ban, three days after their last demonstration.

PUNCH Online reported on Friday that employees under the aegis of the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Senior Staff Association and the National Union of Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Employees had besieged the NAFDAC office to express their grievances over disruptions to their companies’ operations.

They had warned that no fewer than five million Nigerians would be affected, directly and indirectly, by the ban.

Following the Friday protest, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye, engaged with leaders of the protesters. However, Adeyeye insisted that the ban would remain until there was a change in legislation.

At the protest on Monday, employees under the aegis of FOBTOB and NUFBTE, joined by members of the Coalition for the Protection of Consumers’ Rights, were seen carrying placards and singing solidarity songs.

Speaking with journalists, the National President of FOBTOB, Oyibo Jimoh, said engagements with the House of Representatives were aimed at developing a national alcohol policy that would cater to the interests of all stakeholders without an outright ban.

He said that while deliberations on the policy were ongoing, NAFDAC went ahead to seal factories, describing the move as a disregard for the Federal Government’s position.

Jimoh also said some of the claims by the NAFDAC Director-General regarding the alcohol content of sachet beverages were untrue and an attempt to distort facts.

He added that the unions were excluded from the Senate deliberations that led to the closure of their factories, stressing that they would not relent until their demands were met.

Also speaking, the Head of Department in charge of Brewery and Tobacco at NUFBTE, Azeez Rasaq, said the union would not hesitate to mobilise a nationwide protest against NAFDAC.

Rasaq said, “A time will come when we will have to approach the central labour unions, both the TUC and NLC, because they can’t see the possibility of 5.5 million Nigerians losing their jobs and remain silent. Definitely, they will take it up. If the government continues to ignore our calls, it could lead to a nationwide protest. It is very possible.”

Speaking on behalf of the CSOs, Declan Ihekaira said the ban was an attempt to deprive low-income earners of access to alcoholic drinks, adding that such a move would infringe on consumers’ rights. He added that the CSOs would not hesitate to mobilise their members across the country for a nationwide protest to ensure that the policy is reversed.

A staff member of one of the companies, Biodun Adeyemi, said he was willing to participate in a nationwide protest because he could not afford to lose his job. Adeyemi added that losing his job would also have a multiplier effect on his children, whom NAFDAC claimed it was trying to protect.

“It will affect many staff, and I could be one of them. I also have a family that survives on my income, including extended family members. You can imagine the multiplier effect of this decision.

“If the only language the DG or the government understands is people taking to the streets in large numbers, then we are ready to do that to draw attention to our plight,” he said.

The Chairman of FOBTOB in Lagos State, Olamiye Somefun, said the union would have no option but to take the protest to the National Assembly if their demands were not met.

“Our next option is to march to Abuja and storm the National Assembly to tell our lawmakers to hear our grievances. What President Bola Tinubu promised Nigerians on May 29 was to improve our lives. We do not know if the NAFDAC DG is working against that agenda,” Somefun added.

Using insecticides for lice, dandruff can kill, doctors tell Nigerians

    0

Health experts have warned that applying insecticides such as Sniper to the hair or scalp to treat lice or dandruff can lead to severe poisoning, coma and death, stressing that the chemical is highly toxic and unsafe for skin contact.

They said the practice, which has gained traction through word of mouth and social media, exposes users to life-threatening health risks within a short time of contact.

In exclusive interviews with PUNCH Healthwise, the doctors explained that Sniper contains dichlorvos, an organophosphate pesticide that can be absorbed through the skin and interfere with the nervous system, causing uncontrolled nerve activity and organ failure.

They noted that exposure could trigger symptoms ranging from nausea and breathing difficulties to seizures, loss of consciousness and sudden death.

The experts further noted that there is no medical evidence supporting the use of Sniper for dandruff or hair lice, describing such claims as dangerous misinformation. They added that dandruff is a fungal or inflammatory scalp condition that requires proper medical treatment, not toxic chemicals meant for agricultural or industrial use.

Children and people with underlying conditions such as asthma, the doctors noted, are particularly vulnerable, warning that repeated or prolonged exposure increases the risk of long-term damage, including nerve injury, organ failure and possible cancer.

The experts’ warning comes amid a recent post on X, formerly Twitter, by a user, Serah Ibrahim, who cautioned Nigerians against using the pesticide on their hair for lice or dandruff.

Responding to the post, a public health physician, Dr Babatunde Adewumi, recounted a case in which a man applied a Sniper on his children’s bodies to ward off soldier ants, leading to the death of three of them from poisoning.

The tweet read, “It can be absorbed via the skin and kill. This happened when a man put a sniper on his children’s bodies to ward off the soldier ants that infested his house. The first child presented, and I was called to assess for VHF. It was at this point in history that he mentioned that he used a sniper on his children’s bodies; he lost three of his children because of the poisoning.”

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control had, in 2019, expressed concern about the use and misuse of Sniper insecticide and other brands of agricultural formulations of Dichlorovos and warned the public to desist from using them as household insecticides, as such malpractice is associated with public health hazards.

In 2025, after a PUNCH Healthwise report, the agency warned traders against using the products to safeguard food from spoilage.

Despite warnings, Nigerians continue to use pesticides for practices they were not meant or designed for.

Speaking further with PUNCH Healthwise on the dangers, Adewumi, who is also the founder of Quinta Health, said using Sniper on the hair or skin was extremely dangerous and could be fatal.

He explained, “Using Sniper insecticide on human hair or skin is extremely dangerous and can be fatal. It contains dichlorvos (DDVP), an organophosphate pesticide that is strictly intended for agricultural or industrial use and is often banned for household use due to its high toxicity. Applying it to the head for lice or dandruff can lead to severe systemic poisoning, respiratory failure, and death.”

The public health physician explained that dichlorvos works by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme essential for normal nerve function, causing nerves to fire continuously and resulting in respiratory failure and organ shutdown.

Adewumi stated, “Sniper inhibits acetylcholinesterase in the nervous system, which can cause nerves to fire erratically, leading to organ overactivity and organ failure. There is no medical evidence that it’s an effective cure for dandruff, which is typically a fungal or inflammatory scalp condition.”

He added that the chemical strips the scalp of its natural oils, leading to severe dryness, skin damage and possible permanent scarring, whilst offering no cure for dandruff.

The physician said, “These harsh chemicals strip natural oils, leading to extreme dryness, brittleness, and potential permanent scarring of the skin.”

    Related News

Adewumi identified several risks faced by people who apply Sniper to their hair or skin, including acute poisoning with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, sweating, blurred vision and excessive tearing.

The public health expert further noted that exposure could lead to neurological and respiratory crises.

He explained, “Exposure can lead to muscle twitching, tremors, seizures, coma, and life-threatening respiratory failure. Fatality: There are documented cases of deaths resulting from using Sniper on the scalp, including instances where children died after their hair was treated with the insecticide on the advice of others.”

Adewumi warned that long-term exposure to the chemicals was linked to cancer, liver damage, nerve damage, and reproductive disorders.

The physician further decried the practice, stating that it was fuelled by home remedy advice shared on social media or by word of mouth from hair stylists or peers who might not understand the chemical’s lethality.

Also speaking, an Internal Medicine physician, Dr Ebenezer Popoola, warned that many users might not immediately link their symptoms to Sniper exposure, as early signs such as headache, nausea and scalp irritation could appear mild.

He said, “The first thing is that there’s already an abuse of this, and people who are using it are using it from the level of ignorance that they are operating in, and therefore that in itself is dangerous. From a medical perspective, the symptoms can be very subtle. People may experience things they wouldn’t immediately associate with it, such as headaches or nausea.”

Popoola noted that more obvious symptoms included scalp irritation beyond the hair loss users were experiencing, as well as eye irritation.

The internal medicine expert said worsening asthma, breathing difficulty, muscle twitching, seizures and coma could develop with continued exposure, adding that the chemical could damage multiple organs, including the brain and kidneys.

Addressing why people engage in the dangerous practice, Popoola attributed the practice to misinformation, cultural habits and poor access to proper healthcare.

He said, “The first thing here is that it is a cultural or community practice. Oftentimes in the Nigerian setting, we have found out that people tend to take medical advice based on people’s experience rather than going to the hospital for specialist advice. So when they feel like somebody else has used it, then it becomes a norm in the society, in the community.”

The physician noted that misinformation played a significant role in the practice, as users did not understand that the chemical was deadening cells around the application area.

Popoola explained, “What the chemical is doing is beyond what they can imagine. It’s deadening the cells around that place, so in a way, because it’s deadening that cell, they see it as, it’s actually curing the problem, so it’s more like you want to kill a cockroach, and you’re using a sledgehammer, it will still die, but the environment around that place will feel the impact of the sledgehammer.”

He identified lack of access to proper treatment as another reason people resorted to using the insecticide, though he noted that in many cases, people chose not to seek proper medical care despite having access.

Advising people who use the insecticide, Popoola urged immediate discontinuation once they became aware of its dangers and urged people to seek medical attention if they had been exposed.

The physician advised people experiencing symptoms to visit a hospital for further evaluation to assess how far their organs had been affected.

Popoola explained that specialists would place affected individuals on special medication or recommend lifestyle modifications necessary to reverse or halt the progress of complications.

The internal medicine expert urged individuals who had been affected by harmful advice to help educate members of their communities, in order to prevent others from engaging in the practice.

Suspected cultist arrested for killing friend in Delta

    0

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old man, identified as Gare, for allegedly killing his friend, Courage, over a dispute linked to internet fraud activities.

In a video posted on X by Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the police described the incident as a tragic and avoidable case driven by anger, illicit substance intake, and a criminal lifestyle.

“This is quite on a sad note. We have warned twice or three times this year alone on the increasing rate of unnecessary murder cases we are recording due to hot temper, issues that can be avoided, and intake of illicit substances,” Edafe said.

According to him, the suspect and the victim were involved in internet fraud and had a conflict over a transaction.

“Today we are with a suspect who allegedly murdered his friend and former roommate. They were into the business of internet fraud and somehow they had a transaction conflict. One thing led to another, they confronted the late guy, they had a fight, and they used something that looked like a small shovel or battle axe on the head of the victim,” he stated.

Edafe said the police are still searching for the weapon, which the suspect reportedly threw away while trying to evade arrest.

During the interview, the suspect identified himself as Gare, also known as “Oghenegare,” and said he is 28 years old. He admitted to being an internet fraudster.

When asked about his relationship with the victim, Gare said, “For many years, sir. Yes, he was my childhood friend.” He identified the victim as a 25-year-old Courage.

Explaining what led to the fight, Gare said, “He logged me out from work. He said the work was supposed to pay almost $1000. I asked for the login, but he refused to give me.”

During questioning, Gare claimed membership of a cult group, mentioning “Aiye,” which he also referred to as “Black Axe.”

He also admitted owning a small, sharp shovel, which he said he bought for about ₦7,000 and kept “in case of thieves.”

He denied intending to use the axe to kill anyone but admitted that he struck Courage with the weapon twice while fighting with the deceased.

Edafe confirmed that the victim, Courage, was 25 years old.

“A vibrant young 25-year-old man gone just like that because of $1,000, anger, and a fraudulent life,” he said.

The police spokesperson urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s upbringing.

“Please, if you are a parent or an intending parent watching this video, ensure that you bring up your children rightfully. Bring them in the way of the Lord. Bring them in such a way that they will not go into things that will cause them trouble and lead to their family’s death,” he said.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.

‘Mischievous,’ APC Dismisses Reports Of Shettima’s Replacement As Tinubu’s 2027 Running Mate

    0

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports suggesting that Vice President Kashim Shettima might be replaced as Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 elections.

APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, addressed the speculation on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.

Asked about calls within and outside the party for a balanced 2027 ticket, Morka said the party remains focused on governance rather than premature election speculation.

“A few hours ago today, I put out a statement to dismiss some of the rumours swirling around this question regarding the possible replacement of the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima. That story exists only in the realm of rumours and speculation. There is no fact to it.

“By the Electoral Act and the laws of our land, electoral activities are still prohibited. We are not even permitted to seriously engage this question the way the media and public would like.

“Speculating about names to replace the sitting Vice President is wrong. It is simply mischievous, intended to sow discord and confusion in the polity. That is why I had to come out today to dismiss that suggestion and refocus attention on the administration’s efforts to rebuild the economy and drive progress,” he said.

Weighing in on questions about religious inclusivity, Morka reassured that the party is committed to accommodating all Nigerians.

“Our party is very inclusive. This question is not relevant at this time. When the time comes, our party has all the sensibilities and wherewithal to carry that conversation in the best interest of the country. I am not willing to speculate beyond what is relevant.”

The APC leadership has repeatedly described reports of replacing Shettima as “purely speculative, untrue, and utterly baseless.”

Despite these official denials, political blocs have continued to circulate several high-profile names.

Speculation about Shettima’s potential removal largely gained public attention in mid-2025.

An APC North-East stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe descended into chaos in June 2025 after speakers endorsed President Tinubu for a second term but notably excluded Shettima from the endorsement.

Later in 2025, Shettima’s image was reportedly omitted from official party banners featuring APC leaders at a North-East zonal hearing in Maiduguri.

NASS Proposes Voting Rights Of Prisoners In Electoral Law

    0

The National Assembly has introduced a proposal in the ongoing amendment of Electoral law that would give prison inmates in Nigeria the right to vote in elections.

The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, gave the hint ahead of resumption of the National Assembly from Christmas break, adding that the proposed law would mandate release of fund for general elections at least one year before the day of the elections.

Bamidele further revealed that Electoral Bill, 2025 introduces no fewer than 20 defining highlights that would eventually differentiate it from the previous electoral regimes.

“We have started the review of the Electoral Act, 2022 clause by clause to achieve this end. With the Electoral Bill, 2025, we have achieved quite a lot to improve how we manage our elections; enhance the credibility of the process and ensure the political parties are accountable.

“This vision is in line with the sustained public demands for an electoral system that will guarantee the security of votes. The Electoral Bill, 2025 introduces no fewer than 20 defining highlights that will eventually differentiate it from the previous electoral regimes.

“First, under Section 12 (1-2), the Bill recognises the voting rights of prisoners and the obligations of the Independent National Electoral Commission to register all eligible inmates in all correctional facilities nationwide.

“Also, under Section 3 (3), the Bill mandates that funds for general elections must be released at least one year before the day of the elections. Obviously, this reduces uncertainty that often clogs the operation of the INEC and strengthens its independence.”

Late lawmaker’s widow, one other clinch Rivers APC Assembly tickets

    0

The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State on Monday elected candidates for the forthcoming House of Assembly bye-elections for Ahoada East Constituency II and Khana Constituency II.

Napoleon Ukalikpe emerged as the party’s candidate for Ahoada East Constituency II, while Mrs Bulabari Loolo clinched the ticket for Khana Constituency II.

Loolo is the wife of the immediate past occupant of the seat, who passed away in September 2023.

The candidates were elected through what party sources described as a rainbow coalition championed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

They emerged from primary elections organised by the party in the two constituencies on Monday.

Speaking after the exercise, a former lawmaker representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, Senator Magnus Abe, said Wike “is the leader of the Renewed Hope Family in the state. As far as the politics of Rivers State is concerned, the Minister of the FCT is the leader of the Renewed Hope Family. There is no confusion, and there is no dispute about the different roles people are playing.

“Everybody, go and revalidate your membership. We are all working together. We are all supporting President Tinubu. Rivers State will deliver the highest percentage of votes for the Renewed Hope Family in this country.”

    Related News

Also speaking, the Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Dr Thomas Bariere, described the primary election as peaceful and well conducted.

Bariere said, “In the history of party primaries, we have experienced one of the most peaceful and well-conducted primary elections in Khana, and this shows that truly, party politics is growing.”

PUNCH Online reports that the House of Assembly bye-elections in Ahoada East Constituency II and Khana Constituency II were necessitated by vacancies arising from the death of sitting lawmakers, including the late member representing Khana Constituency II, who passed away in September 2023.

Under Nigeria’s electoral framework, such vacancies require the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct bye-elections to fill the seats.

The Rivers APC primaries come against the backdrop of deep intra-party and inter-party realignments in the state following the prolonged political rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Wike.

Since Wike’s defection-aligned bloc publicly declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration under the banner of the “Renewed Hope Family,” the APC in Rivers has increasingly coalesced around figures loyal to the former governor.

This realignment has seen several defections from opposition parties and a consolidation of APC structures in parts of the state, particularly in Rivers South-East and Rivers East.

CISLAC urges N’Assembly to prioritise governance ahead of 2027 elections

    0

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre has urged the 10th National Assembly to prioritise governance, accountability, and key legislative reforms as it resumes work for the 2026 legislative session, warning against the negative impact of early electioneering ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

In a statement issued on Monday, the organisation said 2026 represents a critical period for both the Bola Tinubu administration and the current legislature, noting that Nigerians are increasingly demanding concrete results from policies and programmes introduced since 2023.

The statement was signed by its Executive Director, Auwal Musa, also known as Rafsanjani, who described the year as a turning point for democratic governance in the country.

“While citizens have shown patience in the early phase of this administration, often attributing prevailing socio-economic and democratic challenges to the teething problems of a new government, 2026 naturally marks a period of maturity.

“This is the stage at which policies must begin to deliver visible and measurable benefits to Nigerians, and the role of the National Assembly in achieving this cannot be overstated,” he said.

CISLAC expressed concern that the proximity of 2026 to the 2027 General Elections could lead to a decline in legislative productivity, a trend it said has characterised previous pre-election periods.

The organisation also warned that public anxiety could worsen if proposals to conduct general elections as early as November 2026 are implemented.

“Nigerians are worried, and rightly so, that governance may once again be sacrificed on the altar of politicking and electioneering.

“At a time when the country is grappling with economic hardship, worsening insecurity, rising public debt, governance deficits, and declining public trust in institutions, Nigeria cannot afford a distracted or compromised legislature,” he added.

    Related News

According to CISLAC, the scale of Nigeria’s current challenges requires a National Assembly that is fully functional, responsive, and accountable, rather than one perceived as politically distracted, frequently absent, or acting merely as a rubber stamp for the executive.

The organisation outlined several priority areas it expects lawmakers to focus on during the 2026 legislative year. It called on members of the National Assembly to demonstrate greater commitment to plenary sessions, committee work, and oversight duties, cautioning against frequent absences and prolonged recesses linked to political ambitions.

CISLAC also urged lawmakers to fast-track critical legislative reforms, particularly bills related to electoral processes, the economy, security, and governance. Drawing lessons from the 2023 general elections, the group said electoral reform remains a major demand of Nigerians and should not be further delayed.

In addition, the organisation stressed the importance of strengthening legislative oversight to enhance transparency and accountability, especially in budget implementation, public procurement, and the management of public funds. Rafsanjani warned that weak oversight would deepen public perception of the National Assembly as a rubber-stamp institution.

CISLAC further cautioned the legislature against allowing itself to become an early casualty of the 2027 election cycle.

“Nigerians elected lawmakers to legislate and provide oversight, not to abandon governance long before the official campaign period.

“The legislature is the backbone of any democratic system, and in 2026, the National Assembly must rise to this responsibility with integrity, discipline, and a clear commitment to the public interest,” Rafsanjani said.

The organisation reaffirmed its willingness to engage constructively with the National Assembly and other stakeholders to advance reforms aimed at strengthening democracy, accountability, and good governance in Nigeria.

Makinde calls for reflection as Oyo marks 50 years

    0

The Oyo State Government, under Governor Seyi Makinde, has declared that the celebration of Oyo State’s 50 years of existence is not just a milestone but a moment of reflection, responsibility, and renewal.

The governor, who spoke on Monday at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, while flagging off the celebration of 50 years of Oyo State, also said that the celebration is about securing the next 50 years.

He said, “Today, we gather to flag off the celebration of 50 years of Oyo State; 50 years of identity, resilience, sacrifice, and progress.

“I speak not only as the Governor but as a citizen whose life has been shaped by this state for five decades – from childhood to public service.

“The Chairman of BOVAS Group, Bamidele Samson, mentioned in his speech that I am passionate about Oyo State, but I see it as my way of giving back.

“So this golden jubilee is more than a milestone. It is a moment of reflection, responsibility, and renewal. In recent days, scores of indigenes, residents, and friends of Oyo State have shared tributes on our digital tribute wall. These are stories to remind us that the true strength of Oyo State lies in its people.

“From strengthening our economy to expanding infrastructure, from improving education and healthcare to restoring public discipline and trust, Oyo State has moved from promises to performance and from potential to measurable progress.

“But today is not only about honouring the past; it is about securing the next 50 years. As we mark this golden jubilee, we commit ourselves to a future built on strong institutions, sustainable growth, empowering young people, inclusive development, and lasting stability.

“And above all, we commit to ensuring the next 50 years deliver greater prosperity, fairness, dignity, and hope for every citizen of Oyo State.”

Governor Makinde used the occasion to appreciate service commanders in the state for their sacrifices, dedication, and commitment to keeping Oyo State safe and secure.

“On behalf of the government and people of Oyo State, please, I say thank you,” he said.

Speaking at the event, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, noted the need to recognise people who shaped Oyo State to become what it is today.

“The people also deserve recognition because they played their part in the journey we are celebrating today. It is not only the political actors and rulers who shaped Oyo State,” Oba Ladoja said.

“I do not want to talk about military administrators who saw it as another round of duty; I want instead to focus on the civilian governors, starting from our brother, Uncle Bola Ige, who had our father, S.M. Afolabi, as his deputy, before Chief Bisi Akande took over from S.M. Afolabi. Let me tell you that any civilian governor who served Oyo State had very good intentions and made personal sacrifices to make Oyo State what it is today.

“After Uncle Bola Ige came my brother, Dr Victor Omololu Olunloyo, with our brother from Ogbomoso, Olatunji Mahammed, as his deputy. While these people served under the Second Republic, the Third Republic had Chief Kolapo Adewuyi Ishola, whose deputy is here today, Hamid Gbadamosi. He was the only one who served in the Third Republic.

“In the First Republic, we had my brother, Alhaji Lam Adesina, with Iyiola Oladokun as deputy. After Ladoja, Chief Christopher Alao-Akala served as governor, with our own Taofeek Arapaja as his deputy. Many of these people have passed on, and I think we should recognise them.

“Additionally,” Oba Ladoja expressed surprise that Osun State was not part of the celebration, saying that both states journeyed together for 25 years.

“I have been observing, and one thing shocked me. Oyo State started in 1976, and we had a 25-year journey along with the present Osun State. Osun State should participate in this fiesta. I do not know how it happens that they are not well represented here,” he said, urging organisers to inform the state about the golden jubilee.

He added: “Let them know we are holding this celebration and that we journeyed together for 25 years. Many people shaped the fortunes of Oyo State.”

Also, the Olubadan identified monarchs who contributed to the making of present-day Oyo State, calling on the government to recognise them.

“The people that shaped Oyo State were not only politicians. We had monarchs, and we cannot forget Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II, our father, the late Alaafin Oba Adeyemi III, Ajagungbade III, the Soun of Ogbomoso Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, among others.

“The people also deserve recognition because they played their part in the journey we are celebrating today. It is not only the political actors who shaped Oyo State. By the grace of God, A.M.A. Akinloye, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, Arisekola Also, Baba Olopoeniyan from Okeho, Michael Koleosho, Jibola Atanda, and Baba Okanlawon from Ogbomoso all shaped Oyo State.

“I am not very familiar with civil servants, but on exception, I know Mama Tejumola Alakija, Baba Theophilus Akinyele, and Baba M.S. Adegun. These are people who really shaped Oyo State, but they are gone. So, my dear son, we should not forget them. While celebrating, we must also remember that in this journey, everybody plays their part, and the state continues. The state will continue because we are mortals. We do our part and leave the stage; when you get to your bus stop, you get out. So, those of you who have also helped in shaping Oyo State, and are unsung heroes, let me tell you that if people don’t recognise you today, the state will. Whatever you’re doing is still there—nobody takes away anything from Oyo State.”

Earlier, in his opening speech, Chairman of the Oyo at 50 Anniversary Committee, Hon. Shared Akinade Fijabi, emphasised the need to honour past leaders for their invaluable roles in building Oyo State.

“This milestone offers us the opportunity to honour the efforts of our past leaders—men and women under varied circumstances—who laid the foundation for functional state governance, agriculture, infrastructure, and public service. Their contributions, whether in building institutions, expanding access to education, or strengthening the civil service, have collectively brought Oyo to 50 years,” Fijabi said.

He added: “We distinguish this administration not only by what has been achieved but how it has been achieved—through planning, consultation, data-driven decision-making, and unwavering commitment to fairness and accountability. Today, at 50, Oyo State stands confidently when compared with other sub-national governments in reimagining the economy across the world, in countries like Brazil, India, South Africa, and Indonesia, where strong, people-focused leadership drives rapid transformation.”

He called for joint efforts to build a state that honours its heritage while boldly embracing the future.

The event was attended by the former First Lady of Oyo State, Chief Mrs. Mutiat Ladoja; the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, and his wife, Chief Mrs. Ajibola Lawal; representatives of past military administrators and former governors of Oyo State; former deputy governor, Engr. Hamid Gbadamosi; Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun; former Minister of Trade and Investment, Chief Mrs. Onikepo Akande; former Chief Judge of Oyo State, Hon. Justice Badejoko Adeniyi; and the President, Oyo State Customary Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice T.M. Abdulganiyu.

Also in attendance were Members of the House of Representatives, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde; Chief of Staff, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, mni; Deputy Chief of Staff, Hon. Kazeem Adeniyi; Senior Executive Assistant to the Governor on General Duties, Chief Bayo Lawal; Chairman and Co-Chairman, Oyo State Elders Council, Dr. Saka Balogun and Elder Wole Oyelese; Chief Bayo Oyero; Chairman, PDP South-West, Alhaji Kamorudeen Ajisafe; Women Leader, PDP South-West, Alhaja Bose Adedibu; President-General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Barr. Ajeniyi Ajewole; commissioners; permanent secretaries; traditional rulers; religious leaders; service commanders; and labour union leaders, among others.

PUNCH Online observed that the Soun of Ogbomoso and the Alaafin of Oyo were absent from the event.

No one can defeat Tinubu in 2027 — Atiku’s son

    By Umar Yusuf

YOLA—Abba Atiku, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has declared that no political party can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 praesidential election.

Abba, who recently joined the All Progressives Congress, APC, spoke, yesterday, in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, after collecting his membership registration card at Gwadabawa Ward in Yola North LGA.

According to him, his decision to join the APC was motivated by a desire to contribute to the administration’s “far-reaching economic and human development reforms.”

He stated: “I want to make it very clear that nobody or any political party can stop President Tinubu from returning to Aso Rock in 2027.

“Nigerians have seen his good work; he is not a tribalist and he doesn’t make appointments based on religion or region. His decisions are purely on merit,” he stated.

Abba said he was inspired by the widespread infrastructural growth and human capital development under Tinubu’s leadership.

“The president needs our support to continue the good work. We should mobilise more people beyond party affiliations, to back our president,” he said.

Meanwhile, Adamu Atiku, first son of the former vice president, remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and currently serves as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is reportedly aspiring to contest the Presidency on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, though none of his sons are currently members of the party.

Armed security personnel were deployed around the court premises.

Kwankwaso, NNPP Feel Betrayed By Gov Yusuf’s Defection — Party Spokesperson

    0

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has described the defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as an act of betrayal of the party and its leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

NNPP National Spokesperson, Ladipo Johnson, stated this on Monday while speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Asked whether Kwankwaso felt personally betrayed by the governor’s decision, Johnson said the feeling went beyond the party leader to the people of Kano State.

“Naturally, he [Kwankwaso] feels betrayed. But it is not just about him. The people [Kano] endured eight years of what they described as bad governance and came out in their numbers to give a mandate to the NNPP through the leadership of Kwankwaso.”

He noted that the party had no existing political structure in the state before the election but still secured victory.

“They voted the NNPP from scratch. We had no councillor, no chairman, yet we won the state. They stood by Abba Kabir Yusuf from the tribunal to the Court of Appeal and up to the Supreme Court,” the spokesman said.

Johnson argued that defecting to the APC without consulting the electorate amounted to a betrayal of public trust.

“Without consulting the people, you hand power back to those who were voted out after eight years. That is an act of betrayal, no matter how you try to sugar-coat it,” he said.

    Support Without Kwankwaso

Reacting to claims that Yusuf could have become governor without Kwankwaso’s support, Johnson dismissed the narrative.

“It is easy to say that now. They are enjoying their five minutes. I am sure His Excellency, Abba Kabir Yusuf, would not stand up anywhere in the world to say that,” he said.

Also speaking on the programme, NNPP Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Karaye, said the party was deeply hurt by the development but remained politically strong in Kano.

“We are really devastated. We feel betrayed and we are not happy with this development. But NNPP is still strong and remains the party to beat in Kano,” Karaye said.

He alleged that key party stakeholders were aware of the governor’s plans to leave but were sidelined and dismissed claims that Yusuf left due to internal crises within the NNPP.

He further alleged that party leaders had limited access to the governor and were unable to offer advice.

“The governor closed his doors. There was no access to him,” he said.

Gov Yusuf’s Defection, Ties With Kwankwaso

Governor Yusuf officially defected to the APC on Monday alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and nine members of the House of Representatives.

The announcement was made at a political event held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.

Addressing party leaders, lawmakers and supporters, Yusuf said the decision followed extensive consultations across the state.

The governor explained that the move was aimed at strengthening governance and accelerating development.

“We are choosing partnership rather than polarisation. Political parties are vehicles; the destination is to bring positive change to the people of Kano. Judge this decision by the work we do for the people,” Yusuf said.

Prominent APC leaders at the event included former party National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje; Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin; and Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abubakar Kabiru Bichi.

Yusuf’s emergence as Kano State governor was closely linked to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement until their split in January 2026.

Governor Yusuf’s rise to the Kano governorship was closely tied to Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement until their split.

Yusuf was widely seen as Kwankwaso’s political protégé and rose through the movement’s strong grassroots structure and popular support.

Kwankwaso’s backing was widely credited for Yusuf’s victory in the 2023 governorship election on the NNPP platform, where he polled 1,019,602 votes to defeat the APC candidate.

However, Yusuf’s time in office brought growing pressure for him to assert independence as a constitutionally elected governor.

While he remained loyal to Kwankwaso during prolonged court battles over his mandate, tensions over political control and autonomy eventually strained their relationship.

Olubadan hosts Igboho as Yoruba nation agitator returns from exile

    0

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, on Monday thanked God for the safe return of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, following his reported removal from the Federal Government’s wanted list.

He made this known while hosting Igboho, who paid a thank-you visit to his Bodija residence in Ibadan, the state capital, shortly after returning to Nigeria from exile.

PUNCH Online reports that Koiti Olayomi, the spokesman for the embattled Yoruba Nation activist, said on Sunday that all arrangements had been concluded for his principal’s return to Nigeria after prominent monarchs persuaded President Bola Tinubu to remove Igboho’s name from the list of wanted persons.

According to Koiti, the traditional rulers who intervened include Ladoja; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, among others.

Igboho fled Nigeria on July 1, 2021, following a raid on his Ibadan residence by a combined team of the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Army over allegations of stockpiling arms and ammunition.

The raid occurred amid Igboho’s campaign to evict armed Fulani herdsmen from the South-West in response to attacks on farmers.

During the raid, three of his aides were killed and 13 others arrested. Igboho fled to Benin Republic, intending to fly to Germany, but was arrested at Cotonou Airport on July 19, 2021, and detained for over a year before being released in March 2022.

Koiti said in a Sunday statement that Igboho has now been cleared by the Presidency and “may return to the country at any moment and will be fully reintegrated after his clearance has been granted.”

    Related News

However, Igboho, who was accompanied by scores of supporters to the Olubadan’s residence in Ibadan, thanked the monarch for his intervention, which he said played a critical role in securing his freedom and eventual return to the country.

Speaking during the visit, Igboho thanked the Olubadan for standing by him during what he described as a difficult period.

“I thank God for knowing Kabiyesi. I am very happy that I met him, not knowing that he would be among those who would help me out of this problem,” Igboho said.

He added that Yoruba people across the world were grateful for the monarch’s intervention, noting that his return to Nigeria marked the end of a painful chapter in his life.

Responding, Oba Ladoja urged Igboho to take heart and remain hopeful.

“Where there is life, there is hope. We thank God that you have arrived safely,” he said.

The Olubadan also prayed for Igboho and his family, advising him to conduct himself with wisdom and restraint in the interest of peace and stability.

IPOB directs Onitsha traders to open shops despite Soludo’s order

    0

The Indigenous People of Biafra has asked traders and shop owners at the Onitsha Main Market to open for business on Tuesday, despite Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s directive shutting the market for one week from Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, Soludo ordered the closure of the market following traders’ failure to comply with the state government’s directive to disregard the Monday sit-at-home order.

The governor gave the directive during an on-site visit to the market alongside some aides and other government officials.

He warned that the closure could be extended if traders failed to comply, adding that security agencies had sealed the market to enforce the order.

Soludo described the development as the latest—and perhaps most drastic—salvo in a prolonged struggle over control of economic life in the South-East.

However, in a statement issued late on Monday, the IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, said Soludo must be reminded that no government entity established or funded the traders’ businesses.

Powerful said the Federal Government must heed the call and release IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, without delay to restore peace and normalcy in the South-East.

The statement read in part, “The IPOB hereby declares that tomorrow, January 27, 2026, our people in Anambra State shall resume their legitimate business activities and open their shops and markets.

“This action is not in defiance of any gubernatorial order but in the exercise of their God-given right to pursue their daily livelihoods according to their preferences and necessities.”

He added that traders received no state support during the COVID-19 lockdowns, insisting that their resilience could not be suppressed.

    Related News

The statement added, “Our people endured a three-year food blockade during the Nigeria-Biafra War and emerged as the most entrepreneurial ethnic group in Africa, as well as the most successful immigrant community in the United States.

“Our fathers liberated Nigeria from colonial rule, our ancestors liberated Haiti from colonial oppression, and in the creeks of Savannah, Georgia, we Igbos chose death over enslavement—a legacy chronicled in Alex Haley’s ‘Roots,’ where our ancestors from Onitsha drowned themselves rather than submit to man-made slavery and bondage.

“We have always chosen death over dishonour. Governor Soludo, you cannot defeat our collective spirit of resistance; history teaches us that.

“Before embarking on any perilous path tomorrow, such as deploying soldiers from the Onitsha barracks to infringe upon our rights to conduct business as we deem fit, Governor Soludo must carefully weigh the consequences. Any arrests, harassment, or bloodshed will signal the beginning of the end for those who oppose the will of the people.”

Powerful warned that any arrests or harassment of traders would be resisted, adding that IPOB was not seeking confrontation with the Anambra State Government but demanded respect for the wishes of the people.

“When the great people of Anambra, the first sons of Igboland and the origin of the Igbo race, demand action toward the unconditional release of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, it is the divine speaking through them.

“Tomorrow, our markets shall open, and no force on earth can prevent it. We warn that any attempt to obstruct this will invite grave danger upon the enemies of Biafra’s emancipation.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria must heed this call and release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu without further delay to restore peace and normalcy in the South-East,” the statement concluded.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that Soludo ordered the closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week after many traders defied the government’s directive to resume business on Mondays.

The governor said that despite assurances of improved security, many traders once again kept their stalls locked, describing the development as a reflection of lingering fear in the region.

NULGE backs FCTA workers, directs members to join strike

    0

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Federal Capital Territory Chapter, has directed its members to embark on an indefinite strike from Tuesday, January 27, in solidarity with the ongoing industrial action by workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

The decision was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by the NULGE FCT President, Ibrahim Kabi, and the Secretary, Sa’ad Abdulmumini, following an emergency State Executive Council meeting held on Monday in Abuja.

According to the union, the move followed calls by the Nigeria Labour Congress and directives from NULGE’s national body.

The union said it resolved to join the strike because the issues raised by the Joint Union Action Committee of the FCTA, particularly unpaid entitlements and promotion arrears, directly affect Area Council staff across the territory.

“All NULGE members across the six Area Councils are to withdraw their services effective January 27, 2026.

”The strike will also serve as a platform to press home pending demands currently being negotiated between the FCT Minister and the ministerial committee,” the communique stated.

The leadership urged members to remain resolute, stressing that it had been left with no option but to resort to industrial action to protect the welfare of local government workers.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that FCTA workers, under the umbrella of JUAC, began an indefinite strike on January 19 over unresolved welfare issues.

NAN also reports that the National Industrial Court had issued an interlocutory injunction halting the strike following an application filed by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Justice E.D. Subilim granted the application on Thursday, January 21.

The case, seeking to compel the workers to return to work, was adjourned to Tuesday, January 27.

    Related News

“Thank you for your time, patience, and continued support. We can’t wait to welcome you back on board.”

PUNCH Online reports that the Ujevwu–Itakpe rail service, which links Delta State to Kogi State, is an extension of the Warri–Itakpe rail line inaugurated in 2020 to boost freight and passenger transportation between the South-South and North-Central regions.

The corridor plays a strategic role in evacuating goods from Warri ports and facilitating inter-state travel.

Train operations along the route were suspended several weeks ago due to operational and logistical challenges, including maintenance work on rail infrastructure and safety concerns.

The suspension disrupted passenger movement and commercial activities along the corridor, prompting calls from commuters and stakeholders for an early resumption of services.

The Nigeria Railway Corporation has repeatedly stated that periodic suspensions are necessary to ensure passenger safety and improve service efficiency across its expanding rail network.

Anambra loses N8bn weekly to Monday sit-at-home – Commissioner

    0

The Anambra State Government has disclosed that the state loses about N8 billion while the entire South-East region loses about N19.6 billion every week due to the persistent Monday sit-at-home.

The state Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, disclosed this development in a press statement he issued on Monday.

Mefor said that, as a result, the state government has shut the Onitsha Main Market for one week following traders’ failure to comply with the state government’s directive to disregard the Monday sit-at-home order.

The commissioner said the market will remain shut from Monday, January 26, 2026, to Saturday, January 31, 2026, warning the general public to stay away from the Main Market during this period to avoid any unpleasant encounters with security personnel already deployed to the area.

The statement partly read, “The Government of Anambra State hereby informs the general public that Onitsha Main Market will remain closed from today, Monday, January 26, 2026, to Saturday, January 31, 2026. The market will reopen for business on Monday, February 2, 2026.

“The closure is due to non-compliance with the government’s directive to end the Monday Sit-at-Home, which costs the state up to N8 billion as part of N19.6 billion in the South East every week, while disrupting work and economic activities, leaving the state haemorrhaging.

    Related News

“Traders are further warned that if they are not ready to resume trading on Monday, February 2, 2026, and indeed every other Monday, the market will face a one-month closure next Monday. The general public is also advised to stay away from the Main Market during this period to avoid any unpleasant encounters with security personnel already deployed to the area.

“Furthermore, all other markets in Anambra State remain open and are expected to operate on Mondays. Any market found closed on Mondays will face a similar closure. The government assures traders and citizens alike of maximum security and encourages them to report security breaches to 5111. Thank you for the much-anticipated cooperation.”

PUNCH Online reports that the Monday sit-at-home order in the South-East was initially declared in August 2021 by the Indigenous People of Biafra following the arrest and detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The directive was intended to pressure the Federal Government to release Kanu, with residents instructed to stay indoors and businesses shut every Monday.

Although IPOB later announced the suspension of the sit-at-home order, compliance has persisted in many parts of the region due largely to fear of attacks, intimidation and sporadic violence by criminal elements enforcing the order.

Over the years, the continued observance has severely disrupted commercial activities, education, transportation and public services across the South-East, prompting repeated condemnations by state governments, traditional rulers and business groups.

The All Progressives Congress has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu or the ruling party is enticing opposition governors to defect, insisting that recent defections are voluntary decisions taken by political leaders seeking to align with the administration’s agenda.

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Felix Morka, stated this on Monday while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today, amid growing controversy surrounding the defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, and other political heavyweights to the party.

Asked how the APC succeeded in baiting opposition governors to abandon their existing platforms, Morka refuted the allegation.

He said, “Nobody is baiting anyone. These eminent leaders in our country who are joining our party do so of their own volition. No one is baiting anyone.

“So I can’t tell you where the baits are because that’s not happening. Look, Kano is one of Nigeria’s most important states. So, for a governor in Kano to decide to join our party, you can’t speak of bait. He made that decision on his own, voluntarily.”

Morka argued that the defections reflect confidence in the Tinubu administration and the APC’s political direction rather than inducement.

“There’s something the governors who are joining our party are seeing. They want to identify with this president. They want to be part of the success story of Mr President and the promise of a resurgent Nigeria. That is what is going on.

“So I don’t think we should conclude by suggesting that anyone is being baited. How do you bait the governor of Kano or my state, Delta? These are incredibly massive states in all ramifications, in terms of resources, population and everything. So you don’t bait them.

“These are men who, on their own, have decided to come over to our party because they want to be part of its great story,” he noted.

When asked if Yusuf had automatically become the leader of the APC in Kano State following his defection, the party spokesman hesitated but maintained the party’s established position on leadership at the state level.

“What I can tell you is that Kano is unfolding. But as a matter of principle, in our states, the governors are leaders of our party. Now, this question of leadership, in any case, we encourage a collegiate model of leadership.

“The governor may be the political head, but there are other critical and eminent leaders in all of our states, whose role and involvement in decision making is critical to the success, not just of our party, but of the government, where we have a government in those states.

“So, I think for those on the outside of the media, that question is linear. But for us, yes, the governors are the leaders, unquestionably, of our states. The governors themselves understand that there are leaders in the states with whom they must collaborate in order to actually deliver good quality governance and effective party administration,” he stated.

PUNCH Online reports that Yusuf resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party last week and officially rejoined the APC on Monday, January 26, 2026.

The governor, who was a founding member of the APC in Kano, previously belonged to the party between 2014 and 2018 before leaving for other political platforms.

In his resignation letter to the chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area, effective January 23, 2026, Yusuf cited persistent internal crises and the need to safeguard the overall interests of the people as reasons for leaving the party.

During his official unveiling in Kano on Monday, former APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, described Yusuf’s return as a homecoming, noting that the governor was part of the APC at its formative stage before exiting due to political differences.

Ganduje described Yusuf as a progressive politician whose leadership style aligns with the ideology of the APC and declared that, in line with party tradition, the governor automatically becomes the leader of the party in Kano State.

Yusuf’s defection was carried out alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.

The Edo State Police Command has arrested 11 suspected kidnappers and rescued six victims in massive operations across the state.

The spokesperson for the command, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed this in a statement on Monday.

She noted that the arrests were made during several bush-combing operations carried out in the state over the past week.

The statement read in part, “In one of the operations on Saturday, January 24, 2026, operatives of the command, led by CSP Sunday Ehimare, in collaboration with hunters and vigilante groups, conducted a bush-combing exercise along the Benin–Lagos Expressway near Ohosu following credible intelligence that suspected hoodlums had converged in the forest to carry out criminal activities. Upon sighting the security operatives, the suspects opened fire on the team.

“The police operatives responded with superior firepower, which forced the hoodlums to flee into the bush. In the process, one of the fleeing suspects abandoned an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition, which was recovered by the operatives. Bush-combing operations in the axis are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent any regrouping.

“Similarly, on Sunday, January 25, 2026, a coordinated drone-assisted bush-combing operation led by CSP Solomon Oseghale was carried out at the Era/Idoha forest axis in Ekpoma, involving police tactical units, the Drone Department, Edo State Security Corps, hunters and vigilante groups.

“Four suspected kidnappers were arrested during the operation, namely Mohammed Lawal ‘M’ (62), Ashiru Ibrahim (35), Abubakar Umoru (30) and Umoru Ali (35), while other accomplices escaped into the forest with arms.

“Items recovered include two locally fabricated dane guns and four mobile phones. The suspects will be arraigned accordingly upon the completion of investigations.

“In another operation in Okpella, a 58-year-old farmer, Monday Adero of Iddo Quarters, who was kidnapped while on his way to his farm on January 22, 2026, was rescued through a coordinated operation involving vigilantes and hunters working in collaboration with the police.

“The victim was safely rescued and taken to a medical facility for treatment, while one of the injured suspects was subsequently traced, identified as Gehi Ibrahim (24), and arrested. He is currently in custody and will be prosecuted accordingly.”

The statement continued, “On the night of January 23, 2026, three persons were kidnapped from their residence at Dr Akerenobo Quarters, Emaudo, Ekpoma. Upon receipt of the distress call, operatives of the command mobilised in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, Edo State Security Corps, hunters and other security partners, led by the Area Commander, Ekpoma, ACP Olayemi Jacob.

“The victims, Odion Isideh, Mrs Isideh and Mercy Isideh, were rescued unhurt after intensive bush operations, which led to the suspects taking flight. The victims have been reunited with their families, while efforts are in top gear to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

“In another operation at Idoha Pipeline Community in Esan West Local Government Area, the Divisional Police Officer, Ekpoma, arrested a suspected kidnapper, Rabiu Mohammed Bello (31), following reports of suspected armed herders sighted in the community.

“Other suspects fled the scene with their livestock and weapons. The suspect is currently undergoing investigation and will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction after discreet investigation.

“Furthermore, on January 24, 2026, operatives attached to Ewu Division, in collaboration with vigilantes and hunters, rescued a kidnapped couple following a distress call from Ochodo Community.

“The suspects were engaged and dislodged from their hideout at Igun Forest, Agbede, leading to the rescue of the victims unhurt and the arrest of five suspects, namely Nura Ibrahim (22), Suleiman Aruna (23), Usman Abubakar (30), Mohammed Abubakar (32) and Isah Ibrahim (27).

“Items recovered include eight rounds of 9mm live ammunition, nine empty shells, five Android phones and one Qlink motorcycle. The case is under investigation.”

PUNCH Online reported that seven kidnapped indigenes of Imoga Community in Akoko Edo Local Government Area have regained their freedom.

They were released on Monday evening after the payment of an undisclosed ransom.

The Coordinator, Movement for the Advancement of Akoko Edo People, Dr Bode Ekundayo, disclosed in a message to PUNCH Online last Tuesday that the victims had been reunited with their families.

Dermatologists raise the alarm over leprosy drug shortage

    0

Dermatologists, under the aegis of the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists, have warned of a critical shortage of multidrug therapy for leprosy as Nigeria marks World Leprosy Day 2026.

NAD president, Prof Dasetima Altraide, expressed their concerns in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.

According to him, the shortage has lasted over two years, leaving patients in several states without life-saving medicines.

“Leprosy, or Hansen’s disease, is fully curable with WHO-recommended MDT, but regulatory and administrative delays stalled clearance and distribution of donated drugs,” he said.

Altraide said the required Clean Report of Inspection and Analysis certificates were not provided, preventing NAFDAC quality checks and patient access.

“Where treatment is unavailable, cure is impossible,” he said.

    Related News

He warned that untreated leprosy causes nerve damage, deformities and continued transmission within affected communities.

NAN reports that the 2026 theme, ‘Leprosy is curable, but the real challenge is stigma’, highlights how treatment access reduces discrimination.

Altraide urged urgent intervention and inter-agency collaboration to release MDT supplies and restore nationwide access, warning future disruptions could undermine control efforts.

Citing a 17-year Lagos study, he said essential medicines were a public health duty, a human rights issue and a national responsibility.

Meanwhile, the former Vice President earlier described his son’s decision as a personal one, driven by individual conscience, stressing that such political choices are not uncommon in a democratic setting, even when they involve close family members.

He also explained that differences in political alignment within families are a normal feature of plural politics.

The development comes several months after Atiku Abubakar formally exited the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform on which he contested the presidency multiple times.

Following his departure from the PDP, he joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he is currently working with an ADC-led coalition to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

FG Lauds Funke Akindele Over ₦2bn ‘Behind The Scenes’ Box Office Feat

    0

The Federal Government has praised actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele following the historic box office performance of her film, Behind the Scenes.

The commendation came from the National Orientation Agency (NOA), which described the achievement as a milestone for Nollywood and Nigeria’s creative industry.

In a post on X on Monday, the agency said Akindele had maintained her lead at the box office, noting that Behind the Scenes had crossed ₦2.1 billion in ticket sales.

“Funke Akindele remains in front with Behind the Scenes. Big screens, big stars, and even bigger numbers,” the agency wrote.

The NOA added that the film had made history as the first Nollywood production to surpass the ₦2 billion mark at the Nigerian box office.

It also noted the film’s overseas performance, with earnings of over $111,256 in Canada and $190,249 across North America, describing the feat as “proof of Nollywood’s growing global appeal.’

According to the agency, the success has positioned Behind the Scenes as the highest-grossing Nollywood film across Africa, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, while making Akindele the first filmmaker to top the African box office for three consecutive years.

Akindele first crossed the ₦2 billion milestone on January 12, rewriting Nollywood history and making her Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker.

The achievement was earlier confirmed by FilmOne Entertainment, which described the feat as record-shattering and unprecedented for the Nigerian film industry.

Reacting to the success, Akindele credited discipline, faith, and commitment to storytelling.

“Records are milestones, not the mission. Serve the story, respect the audience, refine the craft, and let the work earn its applause,” she said.

The government’s recognition adds to growing calls for sustained support for Nigeria’s creative sector, as locally produced films continue to attract record audiences at home and abroad.

JOHESU Strike: NMA Denies Doctors’ Salary Upgrade, Faults NLC, TUC Ultimatum

    0

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has dismissed claims by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) that doctors benefitted from an upgrade of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), describing the allegation as misleading and capable of fuelling industrial tension in the health sector.

The National Publicity Secretary of the association, Dr. Mannir Bature, made this known while addressing journalists in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital on Monday, in response to the ultimatum issued by the NLC and TUC over the ongoing nationwide industrial action by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU).

According to the NMA, there was no upgrade of CONMESS in 2014 as alleged by organised labour. Instead, it said there was a correction of long-standing distortions in the implementation of the salary structure, carried out in line with existing approvals and public service guidelines.

    Dr. Mannir Bature,
National Publicity Secretary, Nigerian Medical Association.

The association explained that the action merely restored CONMESS to its originally approved position, stressing that correcting an anomaly cannot be equated with an upgrade or preferential treatment.

READ ALSO: Blame FG For Impact Of Strike On Nigeria’s Healthcare System, JOHESU Tells Nigerians

“The NMA wishes to unequivocally clarify that there was no upgrade of CONMESS whatsoever as falsely claimed. What occurred was a correction of a long-standing error and distortion in the application of the CONMESS framework, which had persisted despite clear approvals and established public service guidelines.

“This corrective action merely restored CONMESS to its rightful and previously approved position. By every objective, technical and administrative definition, a correction of an anomaly does not amount to an upgrade,” the statement said.

The NMA warned that portraying the correction as special treatment for doctors is inaccurate and risks creating unnecessary inter-professional conflict at a time when the health sector is grappling with serious systemic challenges.

It also expressed concern over what it described as the adversarial tone of public ultimatums issued by labour unions, urging the NLC and TUC to exercise restraint and avoid misinformation on sensitive remuneration issues.

“The NMA is particularly concerned about the adversarial tone and issuance of public ultimatums on a matter that requires careful verification, technical understanding and institutional engagement.

“We urge the TUC and NLC to exercise caution, restraint and responsibility in their public communications, especially on sensitive salary structure issues, so as not to misinform workers or the general public,” it added.

The association called on the Federal Government to remain committed to the ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) process as the appropriate and lawful platform for resolving industrial and welfare concerns in the health sector.

It further urged the government to prioritise workforce rationalisation that strengthens frontline clinical services, particularly through the retention and incentivisation of doctors and nurses, while recommending structured outsourcing of non-core support services to improve efficiency and service delivery.

“In addition, the NMA emphasises the urgent need for government to rationalise the health workforce in a manner that prioritises efficiency, service delivery and patient outcomes.

“Greater policy attention should be directed towards retaining, strengthening and incentivising frontline clinical workers, particularly doctors and nurses, who bear primary responsibility for direct patient care and clinical decision-making,” the association stated.

The NMA reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue, transparency and inter-professional harmony in the overall interest of healthcare workers and the Nigerian people.

Bitter Cold Grips Millions As US Digs Out Of Sweeping Snowstorm

    0

Millions of Americans were facing dangerously cold temperatures Monday in the wake of a massive winter storm that whipped snow and ice across the country, knocking out power and paralysing transportation.

A frigid, potentially life-threatening Arctic air mass threatened to delay clean-up as municipalities from New Mexico to Maine tried to dig out following the storm, which dropped a vicious cocktail of heavy snow and wind along with freezing rain and sleet.

Over 780,000 customers remained without electricity, the Poweroutage.com tracking site showed.

Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana — southern states unaccustomed to intense winter weather and the bone-chilling cold that’s forecast to continue for much of the next week — were especially impacted.

Approximately 190 million people in the United States were under some form of extreme cold alert, the National Weather Service (NWS) told AFP.

A person uses as snowblower to remove snow from their driveway in Winthrop, Massachusetts on January 26, 2026. A monster storm barreling across the United States had killed at least 11 people on Monday, prompting warnings to stay off the roads, mass flight cancelations and power outages after a weekend of misery. Areas across 20 states received at least a foot of snow (30.5 cm), and in many cases far more. The NWS said New Mexico’s Bonito Lake accumulated the highest US total over the weekend with 31 inches (78.7 cm).

    New York’s Central Park received 11.4 inches (29 cm) — breaking a same-day snowfall record from 1905.

A compilation of local media reports tallied at least 21 storm-related deaths.

NWS meteorologist Allison Santorelli told AFP the agency was seeing widespread reports of significant ice accumulation, including in places unaccustomed to severe winter weather.

She said this storm recovery was particularly challenging because so many states were impacted — meaning northern states with more resources were unable to share their equipment and resources with less-prepared southern areas.

“A lot of those locations don’t have the means or the resources to clean up after these events,” she said. “We’re particularly concerned about the folks in those areas that are without power right now.”

Dave Radell, an NWS meteorologist based in New York, told AFP that the character of this storm’s snow was “very dry” and “fluffy”, meaning the wind could lash it around with ease, impeding roadway-clearing efforts and visibility.

“That makes it even more challenging,” he said.

    Excruciating Cold

The snowfall and biting icy pellets that pummelling cities saw impassable roads and cancelled buses and trains, along with grounded flights — thousands of departures and arrivals were scrapped over the weekend — as concern turned to the hazardous temperatures set to linger for the better part of a week.

The brutal storm system was the result of a stretched polar vortex, an Arctic region of cold, low-pressure air that normally forms a relatively compact, circular system but sometimes morphs into a more oval shape, sending cold air pouring across North America.

Scientists say the increasing frequency of such disruptions may be linked to climate change, though the debate is not settled and natural variability plays a role.

People in the Great Lakes region woke up to extreme temperatures that could cause frostbite on exposed skin within minutes — in parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the NWS reported early morning temperatures as low as an excruciating -23°F (-30.6°C).

Forecasted windchills in those areas that make the apparent temperature even more frigid could hit as low as -50F (-45.6C), the weather authority said.

As far south as the Gulf Coast was expected to see freezing temperatures each night into the end of the week.

At least 20 states and the US capital, Washington, were under states of emergency in order to deploy emergency personnel and resources.

Many cities had opened warming centres for those without shelter or without power to take refuge, and authorities across the country were continuing to encourage residents who could to stay home.

The Federal University of Technology, FUT Minna, Niger State, has secured a N1billion Tetfund Agricultural Farm Grant.

The Vice Chancellor, Faruk Kuta, made this known on Monday during a press briefing to announce the institution’s 34th Convocation Ceremonies and the 43rd Founders Day celebrations.

Kuta disclosed that the institution also attracted two major global research grants.

He also revealed the establishment of the College of Medical Sciences and Health Technology, which he said has been fully approved by the National Universities Commission NUC.

“The University secured a N1bn TETFund Agricultural Commercial Farm Grant, positioning us among the 10 beneficiary universities nationwide.

“Furthermore, FUT, Minna attracted two major global research grants in
2025: a $3 million ICT Development grant from Agence Francaise de Development and a £15,000 Open Access Books grant from the United Kingdom.

“Similarly, I am pleased to announce the successful establishment of the College of Medical Sciences and Health Technology, following full approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The pioneer students commenced academic activities in the 2025/2026 session,” Kuta said.

The vice chancellor disclosed that the university would be graduating 5,267 on the 1st of February, with 111 of them bagging First class in the first degree category.

    Related News

“For the 2024/2025 academic session, a total of 5,297 students will be graduating on the 1st of February, 2026. A breakdown shows that 4,438 graduates will receive First Degrees, 73 Postgraduate Diplomas will be awarded, 633 candidates will be conferred with Master’s Degrees and 153 scholars will receive Doctorate Degrees (PhDs).

“Among the First Degree graduates are 111 First Class, 1,525 Second Class Upper, 2,134 Second Class Lower, 631 Third Class, and 37 Pass Degrees. These achievements brought to light our unwavering commitment to academic excellence despite prevailing challenges,” the vice chancellor said.

Kuta, who fielded questions from newsmen, noted that the university has been making efforts to address the challenge of student accommodation on campus and thanked philanthropists for their contributions in ensuring that most of the students secured accommodation.

He explained that fixing the convocation ceremony for Sunday, February 1, 2026, was not a deliberate plan to undermine the Christian religion, stressing that the occasion merely coincided with the university’s Founders Day.

“The Convocation Ceremony on Sunday, 1st February, coincides with our 43rd Founders’ Day, a moment to honour the visionaries who laid the Foundation of this institution and to celebrate excellence through prize awards and degree conferment,” he said.

In August, the Federal Government approved the award of N4,249,626,817.69 grant for the funding of 158 research projects under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund National Research Fund 2024 Grant Cycle.

This came following the report of the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee, which recommended the funding of the 158 research proposals after a rigorous screening exercise.

Limit Peace Board to Gaza, Lula sets conditions for joining Trump

    0

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday asked US President Donald Trump to limit the activities of his “Board of Peace” to Gaza.

The request was made in a phone call in which the leaders agreed to meet in Washington, according to the Brazilian presidency.

Lula, who was invited to join Trump’s controversial global conflict resolution organization, proposed that it “be limited to the issue of Gaza and include a seat for Palestine.”

Lula also urged the “comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including the expansion of the permanent members of the Security Council.”

On Friday, Lula, 80, accused Trump, 79, of trying to create “a new UN where only he is the owner,” with his proposed “Board of Peace”.

Although originally intended to oversee Gaza’s rebuilding, the board’s charter does not seem to limit its role to the Palestinian territory and appears to want to rival the United Nations.

Traditional US allies including France and Britain have also expressed doubts.

Lula and Trump have been in contact several times since their first official meeting in October ushered in improved ties after months of animosity between Washington and Brasilia.

    Related News

As a result, Trump’s administration has exempted key Brazilian exports from 40 percent tariffs that had been imposed on Brazil, and lifted sanctions on a top Brazilian judge.

Lula and Trump also discussed the situation in Venezuela, with the Brazilian leader calling for “peace and stability in the region.”

Earlier this month, Lula said the US attack on Venezuela to oust president Nicolas Maduro crossed “an unacceptable line”.

In a 50 minute call, “the two presidents agreed on a visit by President Lula to Washington.”

The presidency said the visit would take place after Lula’s trips to India and South Korea in February, and that a date would be set “soon”.

The veteran leftist Lula has held phonecalls in recent days with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Fire guts farmland, kills one in Kwara

    0

A 73-year-old man, identified as Pastor Awolola, has lost his life following a bush fire incident at the Irewolede area of Ilorin, Kwara State, after he reportedly set fire to an undergrowth on his farmland.

An eyewitness told The PUNCH that the deceased set fire to a small bush around a farmland inside an incomplete building with a perimeter fence and gated entrance.

“The fire engulfed the only exit from the premises which prevented the victim from escaping and burnt him to death,” the witness said.

Confirming the incident, the Head Media unit of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said the service received a distressed call about a man burnt to death on his farm.

The statement issued on behalf of the Director Chief Fire Officer Alabi Muhammed said the victim was trapped while attempting to escape through the fence.

The statement reads, “Firefighters were alerted to the incident at about 11:58am and promptly moved to the scene, where they succeeded in extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading to nearby properties.

“The fire spread rapidly and engulfed the only exit. In his attempt to escape, the victim tried to scale the fence but was overtaken by the flames.

    Related News

“Sadly, the victim was already dead before their arrival.”

The fire service said the body was recovered and handed over to the Community Chairman, Mr Sunday Nuha, for necessary action.

The Director expressed deep sadness over the loss and warned residents against bush burning, especially during the dry season.

He described the practice as highly dangerous and unpredictable, noting that many fire outbreaks result from negligence and poor safety awareness.

“Bush burning is extremely risky, particularly in dry and windy conditions. Members of the public are advised to adopt safer land-clearing methods and to promptly report fire outbreaks to avoid loss of lives and property,” Muhammed said.

He reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, urging residents to cooperate with fire safety regulations.

The Service has continued to caution residents against open burning, as cases of fire outbreaks have increased across parts of the state in recent weeks.

A member of the family of popular actor and filmmaker, Femi Adebayo, has said that his estranged wife, Omotayo Sanusi, also known as Iyan Aladuke, was aware of the circumstances that led to her eviction from a Lagos property.

The eviction recently generated reactions on social media, with claims that Adebayo abandoned his former partner.

However, the family member , Mrs Taiwo Abdulmalik, said the development was the result of a bank recovery process and not a deliberate action by the actor.

According to her, the property was purchased by Adebayo through a bank loan, and the bank later commenced foreclosure after repayment issues arose.

She said Sanusi was aware of the loan arrangement and had prior knowledge of the impending recovery exercise months before the eviction.

“She knew Femi bought those properties with a loan and that the bank was coming for recovery. Those properties belong to him alone, and he is still paying heavy principal with interest,” Abdulmalik said.

Abdulmalik stated that after the bank initiated the foreclosure, Adebayo ensured that Sanusi, members of her family and staff were relocated to a short-let apartment, which he reportedly paid for in full.

“Immediately the bank moved in, he made sure she, her family members living with her and her staff were moved to a short-let apartment, and he paid for everything,” she said.

She added that the actor also encouraged his estranged wife to secure another apartment, assuring her of financial support.

“He told her to go and look for a house to rent and promised that he would pay, no matter how expensive it was,” Abdulmalik said.

The family member further disclosed that in 2022, Adebayo allegedly bought a parcel of land beside Sanusi’s shop on Muritala Muhammed Way and registered it in her name as a backup investment.

“He believed that land would serve as her backup. It was shocking to him when, shortly after the bank foreclosure, she informed him that she had sold the land and spent the money,” she said.

Addressing allegations of neglect, Abdulmalik said Adebayo has continued to provide monthly upkeep for their son and remains actively involved in his life.

“He has never stopped taking care of his son. He loves his children dearly and is very involved in their lives,” she said.

She also claimed that the actor spent about $50,000 last year on a medical procedure for his son in India.

“He spent close to $50,000 last year to take his son to India for medical treatment, but he doesn’t talk about these things because he is a family man,” she added.

Abdulmalik appealed to the public to exercise restraint in judging the matter, describing the circulating narrative as incomplete.

“No one prays for a broken marriage. It’s unfortunate, but the story being told about him is not the complete truth,” she said.

When contacted for her reaction, Sanusi declined to comment on the allegations, describing the issue as personal.

“It’s a family matter. I have never granted an interview and I don’t think I want to start now. It’s really personal to me,” she said.

She added, “This happened in the public space, that’s why I’m out there. I really don’t want to talk about it. Different information has been spreading online, and people are free to say whatever they like.”

Anambra shuts 54 hospitals, clinics for unprofessional practices

    0

The Anambra State government, through the state ministry of health, has sealed no fewer than 54 health facilities across the state between January 2023 and December 2025 over unprofessional practices.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, disclosed the development to journalists during a press briefing in Awka on Monday.

Obidike, however, noted that 15 out of the above-mentioned figures were reopened following compliance.

He said the development was in line with the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of transforming the Anambra healthcare delivery system to International best standards.

According to him, the affected hospitals include the state-owned Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku-Awka.

He said, “I warmly welcome you, on behalf of the Anambra State Ministry of Health, to this press briefing on the significant progress recorded in emergency medical services and overall health system strengthening in Anambra State under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Prof. Charles Soludo.

“Since the official commissioning of the Anambra State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System on May 11, 2023, our state has experienced clear and measurable improvements in emergency response, access to care, and patient outcomes.

“No fewer than 54 health facilities across the state have been sealed between January 2023 and December 2025 over unprofessional practices. But 15 out of the 54 hospitals were reopened recently following compliance with laid-down directives.

“These achievements reflect the administration’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding lives and building a resilient, people-centred health system, driven by the high-impact leadership of our Solution Governor.

“At inception in May 2023, ASEMSAS began operations with a modest fleet of just 10 ambulances across some local government areas.

“Today, under the thoughtful stewardship of Governor Soludo, the system has grown to over 60 operational ambulances across all 21 local government areas of Anambra State.

“In addition, we have received declarations of interest from 588 supplementary emergency transport units. Of these, 315 are tricycle ambulances dedicated to Rural Emergency Services and Maternal Transportation, a targeted health initiative aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, particularly in hard-to-reach and underserved rural communities. We have also integrated seven boat ambulances to serve our riverine populations.

“This more than six-fold expansion of emergency transport has ensured that timely, life-saving care is no longer a privilege of a few but a service within reach of residents across urban centres, rural settlements, and riverine areas alike.

“It is clear evidence that emergency medical care in Anambra State has moved from aspiration to reality. Beyond expanding the fleet, the State Government has deliberately integrated ASEMSAS with an extensive network of public, private, and faith-based health facilities across the state.

“This integration strengthens referral pathways and ensures that patients transported by emergency services are received promptly in facilities equipped to deliver the appropriate level of care without delay.”

Punch Online in August 2025 reported that the Anambra State government sealed a aternity home in the state for operating under poor hygiene standards and without a licence since 2018.

The sealed hospital is Mercy Maternity and Clinic in Uruagwu, Nnewi North Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking to journalists, Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, the then acting director of medical services in the state’s Ministry of Health, stated that the clinic was also operating with unqualified medical personnel.
