Court Orders FCTA Workers To Suspend Ongoing Strike

    0

Justice Emmanuel Subilim of the National Industrial Court has ordered workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to suspend their ongoing industrial action pending the hearing and determination of the originating summons.

The ruling followed an application filed by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, seeking a court order compelling striking FCTA workers to return to work.

In the suit, the FCT Minister named the President and the Secretary of the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC) as respondents.

Justice Subilim held that industrial action, including strikes, must be suspended once a dispute has been referred to the National Industrial Court.

Citing Section 18(1)E of the Trade Dispute Act, the court noted that the suspension ensures the dispute is properly resolved, and that ongoing strikes must halt upon the commencement of a suit by originating summons, which constitutes a referral.

The judge further stated that failure to comply with Section 18 of the Act may attract sanctions.

He emphasized that the public interest in maintaining industrial peace outweighs any inconvenience caused by suspending the strike.

The case has been adjourned to March 25, 2026, for hearing.

On January 19, workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration and the Federal Capital Development Authority, commenced an industrial action, shutting down activities across Abuja, over what they described as “unmet demands” by the Federal Government.

The strike affected all FCTA secretariats, departments, agencies, area councils, and parastatals.

Paga, PayPal enable account linking for Nigerian users to receive PayPal payments

    0

Nigerian fintech Paga and global payments company PayPal have announced the launch of live account linking for customers in Nigeria, enabling users to access PayPal-supported cross-border payments directly through Paga’s digital wallet.

With the integration now live, Nigerian users can receive international payments via PayPal and withdraw those funds locally in naira through Paga.

The partnership allows users to link their PayPal accounts to their Paga wallets, enabling them to receive payments from PayPal-supported markets, shop with global merchants, and access funds in Nigeria. Nigerian merchants and entrepreneurs can also leverage the integration to reach PayPal’s global network of more than 400 million users and expand their businesses internationally.

Through Paga’s platform, users can withdraw PayPal balances, spend via card, transfer funds to local bank accounts, and pay bills and merchants within the Paga ecosystem.

According to Paga’s Founder and Group CEO, Tayo Oviosu, the integration is designed to make it easier for freelancers, businesses, and consumers to access and use global funds locally and securely.

“We are proud to make this integration live and available to users across Nigeria,” Oviosu said. “Whether you’re a freelancer receiving international payments, a business selling online, or a consumer shopping globally, this collaboration makes it easier to access and use global funds locally, in a way that’s simple, secure, and built for our markets.”

In the early 2000s, PayPal partially restricted Nigerians from using the platform, allowing them to send funds internationally but not receive them, due to an increase in fraudulent activity. While PayPal has not fully opened its platform to Nigeria, the integration with Paga provides users with functional access to PayPal services through a local wallet.

PayPal’s Senior Vice President, Regional Head and General Manager of PayPal Middle East and Africa, Otto Williams, noted that the partnership aligns with PayPal’s focus on working with local innovators to support financial inclusion and participation in the digital economy.

“We’ve been intentional about partnering with local innovators like Paga and developing solutions that help Nigerians earn, spend, and grow,” Williams said. “This collaboration helps strengthen the broader payments ecosystem by supporting local innovation, expanding financial inclusion, and enabling more consumers and businesses to participate confidently in the digital economy.”

VIDEO: Man jailed six years for assaulting woman, teenager on UK train

    0

A 27-year-old Daniel Odubanjo has been sentenced to six years in prison for trapping a woman in a train toilet and sexually assaulting her before targeting a teenager minutes later on the same train in Essex, England.

The British Transport Police on Monday released footage capturing the moment officers intercepted the train at Hatfield Peverel station to apprehend Odubanjo following the November 29, 2024, attacks.

According to a news release on its website, BTP revealed that the harrowing incidents occurred aboard a train travelling from Shenfield to Chelmsford.

The court heard how Odubanjo repeatedly banged on a toilet door while it was occupied by a 21-year-old woman.

“The woman inside quickly washed her hands and unlocked the door, expecting to find another passenger needing to use the facilities,” the statement partly read.”But instead she came face to face with Odubanjo, who pushed her back inside the cubicle and locked the door, forcefully grabbing her wrists and sexually assaulting her.”

It continued, “In the struggle that ensued, the woman, who was 21 at the time, managed to open the door and attempt to get the attention of a fellow passenger, but he grabbed her and pulled her back into the toilet where he continued the sexual assault as she screamed for help.

“It was only when she lied about her age, claiming to be 14, that Odubanjo let her go. In an extremely distressed state, she approached a member of staff and left the train at Chelmsford, where she reported what had happened to BTP.”

Moments after the first victim escaped, Odubanjo was said to have targeted a 17-year-old girl, whom he subjected to a “barrage of inappropriate questions” before sexually assaulting her until a brave bystander intervened, pulling Odubanjo off the girl until the train was met by waiting officers.”

The statement continued, “Just moments later, Odubanjo approached a 17-year-old girl boarding the service and sat opposite her, asking her a barrage of inappropriate questions before exposing himself.

“When he left to go to the toilet, the teenager moved seats to sit closer to other passengers, telling them what had happened, but Odubanjo returned and sat next to her and sexually assaulted her.

“A passenger sat nearby grabbed Odubanjo off the girl.

“The train was met by BTP officers at Hatfield Peverel station, just outside Chelmsford, and Odubanjo was arrested at the scene.”

Odubanjo was reportedly sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday, January 12, after being found guilty of one count of False Imprisonment and two counts of Sexual Assault.

The statement read, “Following a British Transport Police (BTP) investigation, Daniel Odubanjo, 27 of King Avenue, Clapham, was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday 12 January for one count of False Imprisonment and two counts of Sexual Assault after being found guilty following an earlier trial.

“Odubanjo received six years in prison, ordered to pay a victim surcharge, and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) which prohibits him from being under the influence of any substance while on public transport, at stations or on Network Rail property.”

Reacting to the sentencing, BTP Detective Sergeant Hayley Whyte commended the victim’s bravery, saying, “Odubanjo preyed on a young woman and a teenage girl in terrifying attacks just minutes apart.

“Both were left distressed and traumatized by the vile assaults he subjected them to. Despite this, their courage and determination to see him brought to justice has resulted in a suitably lengthy prison sentence.

“I commend their bravery, and that of the bystanders who intervened in the second attack.”

PUNCH similarly reported in November 2025 that a Nigerian postgraduate student living in the United Kingdom, Chiemka Okoronta, was to be deported following his 10-year jail term after being found guilty of raping a teenage girl.

The incident reportedly occurred when the teenager became stranded on a night bus service in West Yorkshire.

“The 29-year-old postgraduate student tricked her into sharing a taxi before luring her into his accommodation and attacking her in a locked toilet,” the report quoted Bradford Crown Court proceedings.

Lagos LG unveils nutrition programme to tackle child malnutrition

    0

Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State, has flagged off a community-based nutrition programme to tackle malnutrition among children aged 0–5 years.

Mr. Johnson Akinpelu, the Executive Chairman of the council, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

Akinpelu described the initiative as a timely and impactful response to the most pressing child health challenges facing the community.

According to him, the programme is implemented through a strategic collaboration between the Health Emergency Initiative and the Nigerian Exchange Group.

Akinpelu added that the exercise would focus on vulnerable children and their caregivers within District I of the local council area.

The chairman said the initiative represents a proactive approach to early identification, prevention, and effective management of malnutrition in society.

Police arrest man over defilement of minor in Yobe

    0

The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl in Babbangida town, Tarmuwa Local Government Area.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, on Monday, operatives of the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters arrested Aliyu Yarima of Potiskum Local Government Area following a distress report.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed that on 16th January 2026, the suspect allegedly lured the victim and gave her a soft drink mixed with hard drugs, which rendered her unconscious.

“He then took her to his residence, where he allegedly committed the act of rape. The victim reportedly sustained serious internal injuries, which delayed her reporting the incident.

“She was later rushed to the General Hospital, Babbangida, where a medical examination confirmed sexual assault,” SP Abdulkarim said.

Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will be charged in court upon their completion, the police added.

Security operatives seal Onitsha market to enforce Soludo’s order

    0

The Onitsha Main Market has been barricaded by security agencies who are enforcing the one-week closure of the market ordered by the state governor, Chukwuma Soludo, following defiance of the government’s Monday sit-at-home directive by the traders.

On Tuesday morning, hundreds of security personnel were seen moving around the area, while several security vehicles, including Armoured Personnel Carriers and Hillux vans, were used to block strategic locations across the market.

Recall that Governor Soludo, during an on-site inspection of the sprawling market on Monday, ordered the closure after traders and market leadership refused to open for business, ignoring repeated government appeals to resume normal economic activity.

Soludo warned that the closure could be extended if traders fail to comply with the directive, adding that security agencies have sealed the market to enforce the order. He described the development as the latest—and perhaps most drastic—salvo in a protracted struggle over control of economic life in the South-East.

The state government said that the continuous Monday sit-at-home costs Anambra State about N8bn weekly, and the South East region N19.6bn, while disrupting work and other economic activities.

“The government cannot stand by while a few individuals willfully undermine public safety and disregard official directives meant to restore normalcy. This is plain economic sabotage. We are not going to allow this.

“The closure is a protective measure for law-abiding citizens,” Soludo said, warning that if traders fail to comply, the market could remain sealed for up to one month.

    Related News

The security personnel prevented anybody from moving into the market premises while the shops remained locked, as traders and other people who had come to do business in the market were seen loitering around, watching the security personnel.

Our correspondent observed that during the enforcement, security agencies—including police, army, and other joint task forces—were deployed to enforce the closure, while barricades were placed around the market perimeter to ensure compliance.

Some of the traders who had come to the market were seen gathered at various corners discussing and analysing the development.

At some point, the market would become rowdy and chaotic as the traders ran helter-skelter as the security personnel moved around the premises while enforcing order. This led to some confrontations with the security personnel.

This development, it was further gathered, was also to counter the counter-directive given by the Indigenous People of Biafra, who, in response to the governor’s directive, have urged residents and traders to defy the closure and resume trading on Tuesday, describing the governor’s action as “disappointing and unacceptable.”

Head Coach of Nigeria’s Under-20 women’s team, the Falconets, Moses Aduku, has expressed satisfaction with the team’s preparations ahead of their third-round FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifying fixture against Senegal.

Aduku told the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja that the weeks spent in camp had been productive, with all invited players reporting on time and responding positively to training sessions.

He said the technical crew had focused on tactical organisation, team cohesion, and overall strategy, adding that the players demonstrated commitment, discipline, and high intensity throughout the preparations.

“The team’s attention remains firmly on the upcoming qualifier,” Aduku said, stressing the importance of securing a favourable result in the first leg at home.

He added that friendly matches played during the preparation period were useful in assessing and refining the team’s system of play, particularly in improving attacking options while maintaining defensive balance. He described the team’s performances in the friendly games as encouraging.

NAN reports that Nigeria will host the first leg of the encounter at Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, on February 7, while the return leg is scheduled for February 14 in Dakar, Senegal.

The Falconets, two-time silver medallists at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup and semi-finalists at the tournament in Japan 14 years ago, are expected to travel to Ibadan on January 27 to intensify preparations for the fixture.

While refraining from making predictions, Aduku expressed confidence in the quality and mentality of the players, citing their competitive displays in recent friendly matches. He reaffirmed the team’s determination to make the nation proud and secure qualification for the World Cup.

The winner of the Nigeria–Senegal tie will advance to the final round of the African qualifying series to face the winner of the Guinea-Bissau versus Malawi fixture for one of Africa’s four slots at the tournament.

The 12th edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals will be held in Poland from September 5 to September 27.

Military Should Have Apologised For Earlier Denial Of Coup Plot – Falana

    0

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has criticised the Nigerian military following its announcement that some officers would be arraigned before a military judicial panel over an alleged plot to overthrow the government.

The military made the disclosure on Monday, more than three months after it announced, in October 2025, that 16 officers had been arrested for acts of indiscipline and violations of service regulations.

At the time, the military denied reports that the cancellation of the 2025 Independence Day parade was linked to an alleged coup plot, describing the claim as false, malicious, and capable of creating unnecessary tension and distrust among Nigerians.

However, reacting to the military’s latest statement, which acknowledged an alleged plot to overthrow the government, Falana said the development suggested that the authorities deliberately misled the public.

READ ALSO: Military To Try Officers Over Alleged Plot To Overthrow Govt

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, Falana said the military ought to have apologised to Nigerians for its earlier denial.

“Yesterday, the military authorities ought to have apologised to Nigerians. People in authority must learn to take us seriously as a people,” Falana said.

He added that a reversal of such a serious position without an apology was unacceptable.

“If you had made a statement three months ago that there was no coup plot and, in the course of your investigation, discovered that the matter went beyond indiscipline, you ought to have apologised to the Nigerian people,” he said.

According to Falana, a public acknowledgment of the earlier denial and an apology after confirming the allegations would have been a more honourable approach.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria, however, expressed hope that the military would still apologise to Nigerians.

He said the detained officers could not be tried by court martial. According to him, a court martial would have sufficed if the matter were merely one of indiscipline.

However, since it involves an alleged coup plot, he said the officers can only be charged with treason or treasonable felony, offences which are triable only before a Federal or State High Court.

Adelabu Meets With ECN, REA Over Local Production Of Electricity Components

    0

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has called for strong collaboration between the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and the Rural Electrification Agency  (REA) on enhancement of local production of electricity components.

Adelabu, who spoke during a meeting with the management of the ECN at his office in Abuja, noted that local production of electricity equipment will ensure a reduction in importation and conserve foreign exchange, in line with the vision of President Bola Tinubu for the power sector.

In this regard, the Minister challenged the two agencies to form a partnership that would entail research and data collection, which he said would also enhance planning.

According to him, the desire of President Tinubu is to get the power sector on track to ensure that all other sectors of the economy also grow.

“The ECN and the REA need to synergise. They need to come together, share research, and build data that will help the sector in local production of the components of electricity.

“We must do everything possible in this regard as this will make Mr. President to be happy that in his time, we are manufacturing meters and other critical inputs for ourselves.

“Today, we are happy that our export is growing higher than our imports and we must encourage this and conserve our foreign exchange”, the Minister said.

The Minister also emphasised the need for data, saying that “the absence of data is a serious challenge to us as we cannot plan without data and you cannot get accurate information without data”.

According to him, the ministry is planning to have a central data pool and informed the ECN to be part of the process.

“We are going to have a central data pool, and you must be part of this process. All the stakeholders in the power sector, including the GenCos and the DisCos, will be brought into the data process, and this is going to get around all the agencies of the ministry so that we can have reliable data for the sector.

“Research is also very important and critical to us, so your agency must also work closely with the Research Department of the ministry, as this will help us in our planning”, Adelabu said, adding that if this can be achieved, the challenges of the sector can be effectively dealt with.

For a better working relationship, Adelabu said that ECN is expected to be part of the Power Sector Working Group, which meets every quarter, saying, “Although you deal with some other issues according to your mandate, your agency must be part of the working group of the sector.

“If we are talking of Power generation, the hydro is still the most reliable all over the world. We have over 300 small dams scattered all over the states of the nation. These small dams are very important to us.

“We need local capacity in turbine production as this is the most critical element in the hydro power generation. We must make use of these dams for our power generation, and your agency will play an important role in this process.

“States must also take the responsibility of generation, transmission, and distribution so that the challenges of power can be reduced. These turbines are what we must lay emphasis upon”, he said, adding that the ministry is ready to support it, as the turbine is the most important part of this process”, the Minister said.

The Director General of ECN, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, expressed readiness of the agency collaborate with the ministry to achieve the vision of President Tinubu in turning around the nation’s economy.

Defections: We can’t stop politicians from joining our party  —  APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it cannot prevent politicians from defecting to the ruling party, describing the recent wave of defections as a reflection of confidence in the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, stated this on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television, where he responded to concerns over the growing number of governors joining the APC, including the recent defection of the Kano State governor.

Morka said governors defecting to the ruling party were aligning themselves with what he described as a ‘resurging Nigeria’ under the Tinubu administration.

“What you see is governors who have decided to join our party to identify with this resurging Nigeria that this President is clearly positioning Nigeria to be,” he said.

He added that the APC welcomed new members and would not act as a barrier to politicians seeking to join the party.

“We are happy, we are excited about people who join our party. We cannot be gatekeepers to filter out people who want to join our camp. We don’t do that because it is undemocratic,” Morka said.

Addressing fears that the defections could lead to a one-party state, the APC spokesperson dismissed such concerns, arguing that Nigeria had experienced similar political dominance in the past without undermining democracy.

“The Peoples Democratic Party at some point in our history governed Nigeria with about the same number of governors,” he said.

“I was very active in the political world at that time and there was no spectre anywhere about a one-party state because the PDP had those numbers of governors. That’s not the case now, and I think we should not equate people joining our party with that mode,” Morka added.

“We see Search as a cultural mirror that captures the pulse of the nation, and remain committed to ensuring our tools, from Search to Gemini, provide the relevant and helpful insights Nigerians need to navigate their daily journeys and build a more prosperous future,” Kola Ogunlade says.

In 2025, Nigerian Google searches focused more on local and political issues, as well as staying fluent in digital culture and slang.

Based on the Google search data for the new year, it seems Nigerians have collectively decided that 2026 is the year of upgrade. However, turning these resolutions and searches into actionable self-improvement will take more than just intent and plans.

Yusuf, who was previously a member of the APC before contesting and winning the 2023 governorship election on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party, defected alongside several members of the Kano State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives.

The governor was formally received into the APC by the former National Chairman of the party and immediate past Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje; the Deputy President of the Senate and Senator representing Kano South, Barau Jibrin; the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata; and other top party leaders.

Speaking at the event, Yusuf said his return to the APC was anchored on the need to work more closely with the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

He disclosed that the decision was taken collectively with key political stakeholders in the state.

The governor explained that the move was based on the reality of aligning with the Federal Government to support President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he described as development-driven and beneficial to Kano State.

He stressed that the decision was not motivated by personal interest or negative considerations, but by the desire to promote peace, unity and development in the state.

    Related News

Yusuf added that aligning with the central government would end what he described as isolation politics and accelerate development in the state.

He expressed confidence that the move would create a calmer political atmosphere in Kano, noting that it did not diminish the contributions of those who supported his emergence as governor.

He assured residents that his administration would remain inclusive, adding that no group or individual would be excluded.

Reacting in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, Keyamo welcomed the governor back to the ruling party.

Keyamo said that the governor will be remembered for good for prioritising the welfare of the people over loyalty to anyone.

He wrote, “My dear brother, H.E. Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, welcome back home to the APC. With your giant strides in Kano as a true progressive governor, it feels like you never left the APC.

“History will record that you prioritised the welfare of your people over and above blind loyalty to anyone.”

NCoS debunks jailbreak in Edo prison

    0

The Nigerian Correctional Service has dismissed as false and misleading reports alleging a jailbreak at the Benin Custodial Centre in Edo State.

In a statement signed on Tuesday by the Service Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Correction JIN Osuji, the NCoS described the reports, which began circulating on January 24, as completely unfounded.

According to the report being circulated, three inmates, including two convicted fraudsters, allegedly escaped from the custodial centre on Friday, January 16, 2026.

The report further identified the third alleged escapee as one of the persons arrested in connection with the 2020 #EndSARS protests, who had not received a final conviction.

Osuji stated that there had been no jailbreak, escape, or security breach in any custodial centre in Benin City or elsewhere in Edo State.

    Related News

He said, “Comprehensive checks and verifications conducted by the Edo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service confirm that all inmates are fully accounted for, and custodial operations across the State remain secure, stable, and under effective control.”

The Service expressed concern that the media organisation involved did not seek verification from either the Edo State Command or the National Headquarters of the NCoS before publishing what it described as a grave allegation with serious public safety implications.

“The Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to assure the general public, especially residents of Benin City and Edo State, that all custodial facilities in the State are secure, there is no threat whatsoever to public safety arising from any custodial centre, and the Service remains fully committed to its statutory mandate of safe custody, security, and rehabilitation of inmates,” the statement said.

While reaffirming its respect for the role of the media in nation-building, the NCoS warned that it would not hesitate to pursue appropriate legal remedies against individuals or media organisations that publish false, unverified, or malicious reports capable of causing public panic, undermining national security, or damaging the image of the Service.

PHOTOS: CDS vows to reposition military

    0

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to operating as a people-centred, ethically grounded, and professionally accountable military.

According to a post by the Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, on DHQ’s X handle on Tuesday, Oluyede stated this at the opening ceremony of the Human Security and Gender Advisers Course held at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Asokoro, Abuja.

The CDS, who was represented by the Chief of Defence Standards and Evaluation, Major General Ibrahim Lassa, commended the British Defence Staff for their sustained support and cooperation in strengthening the operational effectiveness of the AFN, particularly in the area of civil-military relations.

    Participants in the capacity building

He noted that the collaboration reflects the enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, based on shared values and a common commitment to people-oriented approaches to national security.

Oluyede observed that Nigeria’s security environment remains complex and multidimensional, characterised by asymmetric warfare, violent extremism, communal conflicts, transnational crimes, and humanitarian emergencies that directly affect the civilian population.

“Modern security efforts must go beyond territorial defence to include the protection of lives, preservation of human dignity, and the strengthening of societal resilience.

“The course aligns with his strategic vision of consolidating the capacities of the AFN through enhanced jointness, a reinforced operational posture, improved welfare initiatives, and sound administration,” he said.

These efforts, he said, are aimed at sustaining the Armed Forces’ core mandate of guaranteeing Nigeria’s sovereignty and prosperity under a whole-of-government approach.

He added that the AFN is being repositioned as a force that is not only operationally capable, but also ethically grounded, people-centred, and responsive to the socio-cultural realities of its operational environment.

The CDS further underscored that preventive action, collaboration with civilian institutions, and the protection of civilians are now integral components of military effectiveness. He described human security and gender advisory roles as force multipliers that enhance legitimacy, expand operational reach, and improve mission sustainability.

Oluyede encouraged participants to take full advantage of the course as a platform for knowledge exchange, critical reflection, and professional networking, noting that the skills acquired must be applied during operational planning, field deployments, and engagements with civilian populations.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, Rear Admiral Saburi Lawal, described the course as a key initiative aimed at enhancing the professional competence of Nigeria’s security institutions.

He said participants were carefully selected to serve in advisory roles within the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Lawal expressed confidence that the training would enhance professionalism, strengthen civil-military cooperation, and build trust between security agencies and the civilian population.

He urged participants to approach the programme with dedication, professionalism, and an open mind.

He added that the Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to collaborate with local and international partners to promote capacity building and professional development of its personnel.

Terrorists kidnap six family members in Adamawa

    0

The hometown of the Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, Madagali, was attacked in the early hours of Tuesday by suspected terrorists, kidnapping six family members.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday morning by the state Police command spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje.

Nguroje stated that a combined rescue team of police and the military are in the area searching for the abducted family members.

The statement reads, “The Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed an attack on Gare Village, Pallam District, Madagali Local Government Area, in the early hours of today by suspected terrorists, which led to the abduction of six(6) family members and the rustling of livestock.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Command immediately intensified collaboration and deployed additional personnel and operational assets in a joint operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, Troops of 144 Battalion, and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) to the affected area and surrounding communities.”

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Adamawa State Command, Dankombo Morris,  has directed sustained search-and-rescue operations, reinforced patrols and beefed up security presence across Madagali and other border communities to ensure the safe rescue and return of the victims and prevent further threats.

    Related News

Nguroje  stated, “The Command, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other sister security agencies, remain fully committed to protecting lives and properties across the State.”

    “Further updates will be communicated.”

Fintiri on Tuesday began a tour of the 21 local governments in the state to assess the security situation and other issues confronting the people in their areas.

The Hong Local Government was also attacked recently, where 12 people lost their lives and houses were destroyed.

The communal crisis between Bachaman and Chobo communities in Lamurde Local Government Area in Adamawa state, early this year, claimed over 20 lives.

MTN partners Lagos to build bus park at Obalende under-bridge

    0

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to redevelop the Obalende under-bridge into a modern transport hub, to be known as Y’ELLO Bus Park, in collaboration with MTN Nigeria.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Tuesday.

According to Wahab, the project is aimed at transforming the previously degraded and unsafe space into a functional, secure and community-oriented facility that will serve commuters and residents in the Obalende area.

“The new bus park will feature an organised and regulated transport terminal, a recycling drop-off station, a road camp for LAWMA sweepers and security agencies, over 60 public toilet fixtures, kiosks, and other essential amenities designed to serve commuters and residents alike.

“The design prioritises safety, health, and aesthetics. Solar-powered lighting will improve night-time visibility, reduce blind spots, and enhance CCTV effectiveness, helping to curb criminal activities and improve overall security in the Obalende axis.

“A biodigester system is also being introduced to sustainably manage wastewater generated within the park, while a dedicated recycling station will discourage illegal waste disposal in the area,” Wahab said.

    Related News

He further stated that the project aligns with the state’s climate responsibility agenda, with plans to install solar panels to support energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

According to the commissioner, tree planting is also planned to improve air quality and enhance the visual appeal of the environment.

Wahab said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reclaiming public spaces and making them functional, sustainable and safe for Lagos residents.

“This project reflects our resolve to reclaim public spaces, make them functional, sustainable, and safe, and ensure they serve the needs of Lagosians in a modern, responsible way,” he said.

PUNCH Online reports that the initiative follows last week’s enforcement actions, where state authorities evicted squatters and cleared illegal structures under the bridge.

EU, India Sign ‘Mother Of All’ Trade Deals

    0

India and the European Union announced Tuesday the “mother of all deals”, a huge trade pact to create a market of two billion people, reached after two decades of negotiations.

EU chiefs and Prime Minister Narendra Modi hope the pact will help shield against challenges from the world’s two leading economies, the United States and China.

The agreement will cut or eliminate tariffs on almost 97 per cent of European exports, saving up to 4 billion euros ($4.75 billion) annually in duties, the 27-nation bloc said.

“A mother of all deals,” Modi said Tuesday in the capital New Delhi, where he met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa.

“This deal will bring many opportunities for India’s 1.4 billion and many millions of people of the EU,” Modi said, adding the agreement “represents about 25 per cent of global GDP, and one-third of global trade”.

The EU has eyed India — the world’s most populous nation — as an important market for the future.

“Europe and India are making history today,” von der Leyen said in a statement, a day after she and Costa were feted as guests of honour at India’s Republic Day parade.

“We have created a free trade zone of two billion people, with both sides set to benefit.”

EU officials said the deal was the most ambitious India had ever signed, and European companies would benefit from so-called “first mover advantage”.

Europe’s key agricultural, automotive, and service sectors stand to gain.

New Delhi sees the European bloc as an important source of much-needed technology and investment to rapidly upscale its infrastructure and create millions of new jobs.

    ‘Highest level of access’

Bilateral trade in goods reached 120 billion euros ($139 billion) in 2024, an increase of nearly 90 per cent over the past decade, according to EU figures, with a further 60 billion euros ($69 billion) in trade in services.

Under the agreement, India is expected to ease market access for key European products.

Tariffs on cars will be gradually lowered from a top rate of 110 per cent to as low as 10 per cent, while duties on wines progressively go down from 150 per cent to as low as 20 per cent.

Currently at 50 per cent, tariffs on processed foods — including pasta and chocolate — will be eliminated, according to the EU.

Von der Leyen said she expected exports to India to double, and that the EU would “gain the highest level of access ever granted to a trade partner in the traditionally protected Indian market”.

European firms will get privileged access to the Indian financial services and maritime transport market, the bloc said.

For India, it would boost sectors including textiles, gems and jewellery, and leather goods, as well as the service sector, Modi said.

Talks went down to the wire on Monday, focusing on a few sticking points, including the impact of the EU’s carbon border tax on steel, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

    ‘Clear Choice’

The accord comes as both Brussels and New Delhi have sought to open up new markets in the face of US tariffs and Chinese export controls.

India and the EU were also expected to conclude an accord to facilitate movement for seasonal workers, students, researchers, and highly skilled professionals, and a security and defence pact.

“India and Europe have made a clear choice. The choice of strategic partnership, dialogue, and openness,” von der Leyen wrote on social media. “We are showing a fractured world that another way is possible.”

India is on track to become the fourth-largest economy this year, according to International Monetary Fund projections.

New Delhi, which has relied on Moscow for key military hardware for decades, has tried to cut its dependence on Russia in recent years by diversifying imports and pushing its own domestic manufacturing base.

Europe is doing the same with regard to the United States.

California To Probe TikTok On Trump Censorship Allegation

    0

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he was launching a probe on Monday into allegations that TikTok censored content critical of US President Donald Trump.

Democratic Newsom is one of Trump’s most vocal critics and has accused the president’s administration of curbing basic freedoms in the United States.

“It’s time to investigate. I am launching a review into whether TikTok is violating state law by censoring Trump-critical content,” Newsom posted on X.

TikTok announced last week it had established a new joint venture to operate its US business, which would reduce its Chinese ownership to 19.9 percent and put majority control in the hands of American businesses, including Trump’s allies.

Washington has long sought to tighten control on TikTok, citing national security concerns over the platform’s Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance.

“Following TikTok’s sale to a Trump-aligned business group, our office has received reports — and independently confirmed instances — of suppressed content critical of President Trump,” Newsom’s office wrote on social media platform X.

Newsom shared a screenshot appearing to show a TikTok user unable to send a message reading “Epstein” because it violated the platform’s community guidelines.

Trump’s past friendship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has brought intense scrutiny to the president.

TikTok did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Dangote Refinery Hikes Gantry Petrol Price To ₦799, Pump Price To ₦839 Per Litre At MRS Stations

    0

Management of the Dangote Petrochemical Refinery has announced a new gantry Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) price of ₦799, and a pump price of ₦839 per litre at MRS stations nationwide.

The adjustment in prices was revealed in a statement by the Refinery on Monday.

The development follows the previous gantry price of ₦699 per litre, and the ₦739 pump price announced ahead of the last yuletide celebration.

Ahead of the 2025 Christmas celebration, President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, announced a petrol price cut to ₦739 per litre nationwide, with initial implementation at MRS stations in Lagos.

Dangote, at a press briefing at the Lekki refinery, said the gantry price had been reduced from ₦828 to ₦699 per litre.

He assured that the ₦739 per litre pump price would be enforced and emphasised his commitment to fight price manipulation.

“Starting from Tuesday, MRS will start selling petrol at N739/litre. Definitely, we will enforce that low price. We will make sure that it’s implemented. If you have your truck, you can come here and buy it. We are selling at N699. The N699 includes the percentage of NMDPRA. So what actually comes out to us is about N389 or so.

“Those who want to keep the price to sabotage the government, we will fight as much as we can to make sure that these prices are down. N970 is not the price. If you have money to come and buy, you can pick up petrol at N699,” he told journalists at the time.

However, in the statement sent by the Refinery management to journalists on Monday, Dangote noted that with the festive period concluded, “PMS prices have been modestly realigned to sustainable levels to support long-term market stability and affordability.

“Under the current alignment, the PMS gantry price is ₦799 per litre, while MRS retail outlets are selling at ₦839 per litre”, according to the statement, signalling an increase in price from the earlier announced pump price of ₦739 per litre.

The Refinery, however, reaffirmed its commitment to market stability and uninterrupted nationwide product supply.

While speaking on the development, the Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, David Bird, stated that the Refinery “continues to supply the domestic market with approximately 50 million litres of PMS daily, with nationwide evacuation and distribution operating normally.”

He noted that the Refinery’s design flexibility allows it to process a wide range of crude and intermediate feedstocks, enabling continued PMS supply during planned maintenance activities.

According to him, this capability ensures that the domestic supply remains stable and uninterrupted.

Meanwhile, the Refinery’s management has alleged that some oil marketers are robbing the masses of the benefits of price cuts.

The Refinery noted that during the last festive period, it implemented a deliberate, temporary price support intervention to cushion Nigerians amid heightened household spending.

This, the Refinery, said marked the second consecutive festive season in which it absorbed high costs in the national interest, including logistics support in 2024 and a price reduction in 2025 to promote affordability and market calm.

It, however, noted that despite the price reduction, “many filling stations failed to reflect the new price at the pump, thereby denying Nigerians the benefits of the reduction”.

READ ALSO: Petrol Will Be Sold At ₦739 Per Litre From Tuesday — Dangote

Last December, The Refinery had slashed the gantry price from ₦828 to ₦699 per litre.

The move marked one of the several cuts in gantry prices by the Refinery, a gesture that pitched Dangote against oil marketers who accused the businessman of plotting to hijack the downstream market.

Speaking further, the Refinery, however, defended itself as a domestic producer, that “continues to shield the Nigerian market from import-related volatility and external supply disruptions, while remaining a stabilising force in the downstream petroleum sector.”

Dangote Petroleum Refinery noted that it remained focused on delivering energy security, price stability, and long-term value for Nigerians.

Group hails Kogi’s security, infrastructure gains

    0

Civil Society Organisations have commended Governor Ahmed Ododo for significant improvements in security and infrastructure within his first two years.

KONGONET gave the commendation in a statement jointly signed by its Chairperson, Mr Hamza Aliyu, and Secretary, Reuben Joshua, in Lokoja on Monday.

“Ododo’s administration has made a significant impact in the areas of security, healthcare, education and infrastructure development in the state, ” it stated.

The organisation, in its assessment of the governor’s performance, highlighted both the gains and the gaps in the last two years.

According to KONGONET, the administration has made strides in rehabilitating roads, strengthening healthcare delivery, and promoting agriculture.

It noted, “Ododo’s administration for prioritising security, collaborating with federal agencies and supporting local initiatives.”

The group noted with pain that pressing challenges in water supply, waste management, and citizen engagement threatened to undermine the administration’s achievements.

“The rural communities still struggle with poor road access, and healthcare facilities remain under-equipped.

“The water situation in Lokoja, the state capital, has reached alarming levels, with many residents relying on unsafe sources or expensive private vendors.

“Poor waste management has earned Lokoja the reputation of being the “dirtiest state capital” in Nigeria, posing serious environmental and public health risks.

“While relative stability has improved in some areas, security concerns persist, particularly in border communities, where attacksarebeingexperienced, ” it stated.

KONGONET urged Gov. Ododo to institutionalise quarterly town hall meetings to rebuild trust and ensure citizen voices inform governance, strengthen procurement transparency and publish annual procurement plans.

    Related News

The group urged him to prioritise sustainable water solutions and urban sanitation, and a viable mass transit system, especially in Lokoja metropolis, to ease transportation.

The organisation further called for support for the Social Protection Policy Framework development, and the appointment of statutory boards for transparency purposes

“As the administration enters its final two years, decisive action on these issues will shape citizens’ perceptions and determine the legacy of Governor Ododo’s tenure,” the group said.

In the same vein, the Executive Director of Conscience for Human Rights and Conflicts Resolution, Idris Abdul, acknowledged the governor’s efforts in paying salaries, maintaining peace, and improving security in the state.

Abdul said there was still much work to be done, particularly in areas such as transportation, housing, water, tourism, human development, and healthcare.

“Two years is a significant milestone, but it’s not enough to determine the success of an administration.

“We urge Governor Ododo to do more to address the pressing issues facing Kogi,” Abdul said.

He also commended the governor’s security efforts, including the recent successes of security agencies in Kogi, but emphasised the need for sustainability and community involvement in addressing insecurity.

Abdul also urged the governor to initiate town hall meetings with citizens, reduce his cabinet size, and appoint professionals with relevant skills to drive development in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ododo was elected in November 2923 and sworn in to office on Jan. 27, 2024.

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich in talks to extend Harry Kane’s contract

    0

Bayern Munich are in talks with Harry Kane over a potential contract extension, the club’s sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed.

The England captain joined the German champions from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2023 on a four-year deal worth an initial €100m (£86.4m).

Since arriving in Munich, Kane has enjoyed a prolific spell, scoring 119 goals and providing 30 assists in 126 appearances across all competitions.

According to BBC Sports on Tuesday, Eberl said,”We’re talking to Harry, we’re talking,” Eberl said at a Bundesliga event in Frankfurt.

“Everyone knows at some point a decision has to be made.”

    Related News

In October, Kane said he “could definitely” see himself staying at Bayern, and that his desire to return to the Premier League had “gone down a little bit”.

This season he has scored 34 times in 30 games for Vincent Kompany’s side, including 21 goals in 19 Bundesliga outings as he tries to beat former Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski’s record of 41 goals in a single Bundesliga campaign.

Kane has also helped Bayern to second place in the Champions League group phase table with one game to go.

“Harry has great confidence in us and he feels comfortable in Munich.

“He and his family are settled in. Therefore, we’ve got absolutely no reason to rush, said Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen.”

Social media is back in Uganda, but at a $7M cost

Image of social media apps on a mobile phone

After nearly two weeks offline, social media is finally back in Uganda, and the cost of switching it off is becoming clearer. Per a report by CEO EastAfrica Media, mobile network operators MTN and Airtel may have lost as much as $7 million (about UGX 24 billion) in data revenue during a four-day internet shutdown tied to the country’s recent elections.

The shutdown didn’t just hit telcos’ revenues; it disrupted everyday life. With internet access cut, many Ugandans were unable to carry out basic financial transactions, triggering frustration and public outrage. It was another reminder that when the internet goes dark, both citizens and businesses pay the price.

On Monday, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Force, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced the full restoration of access to all social media platforms, 13 days after the Ugandan Communications Commission (UCC) imposed a nationwide blackout two days before the January 15 general elections. In a post on X, Muhoozi thanked citizens for their cooperation during the restriction, saying it helped maintain the electoral process.

MTN Uganda also confirmed the restoration in a post to customers, announcing that internet services were fully back and that users could once again access platforms like WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok. With the move, Ugandans now have unrestricted access to major social and messaging platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, a major relief for individuals and businesses alike.

The shutdown had been rolled back in phases. While general Internet access was restored last Sunday, social media and OTT messaging apps remained blocked. Authorities said the restrictions were necessary to curb misinformation and maintain security during a tense election period. Mobile money services were later restored, easing some pressure. Still, the episode highlights the economic and social cost of internet shutdowns — costs that extend far beyond politics.

Nigeria’s SEC raises the stakes for crypto exchange

    Nigeria's SEC building

    Nigeria’s SEC building

Nigeria’s crypto party just got a lot more expensive. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has set a new ₦2 billion minimum capital requirement for digital asset exchanges and custodians, raising fresh questions about who can realistically afford to play in the country’s fast-growing — and fiercely competitive — crypto market.

The move is part of the SEC’s broader effort to tighten oversight of crypto, following new licensing rules for virtual asset service providers and the classification of some crypto assets as securities. On paper, the logic is simple: force exchanges to hold more capital, reduce the risk of collapse, protect users’ funds, and make the market safer for institutional players. In theory, stronger balance sheets mean fewer disasters during market shocks.

But industry players say the execution misses the mark. Luno Nigeria CEO Ayotunde Alabi describes the rule as “directionally defensible” but blunt. Nigeria’s crypto economy, he argues, doesn’t live mainly on centralised exchanges. A large chunk of activity happens via peer-to-peer trading, OTC desks, and informal stablecoin rails. That means compliant exchanges now carry heavier regulatory costs, while riskier, unregulated channels remain largely untouched. Alabi believes a tiered, risk-based capital system would better reflect how the market actually works.

Others worry the rule will simply cement foreign dominance. More than 90% of Nigeria’s crypto activity is already controlled by Binance, Bybit, and WhatsApp P2P, according to recent studies. These global players can easily meet the ₦2 billion threshold, while smaller local exchanges struggle to keep up, especially when licensed VASPs don’t enjoy clear advantages over unlicensed or foreign competitors.

The big question now is whether Nigeria’s crypto ecosystem is ready for this kind of regulation, or if it risks squeezing out local innovation too soon. For more information, check out Bolu’s story.

    Trove acquires a licensed broker

    Oluwatomi Solanke, Trove Finance CEO

January 2026 in Nigerian tech feels like acquisition season. Just when you think the year is still warming up, another startup snaps up a key piece of infrastructure. This time, it’s fintech startup Trove Finance, which has quietly joined the growing list of companies choosing ownership over partnerships.

Trove has acquired UCML Securities Limited, bringing its brokerage operations fully in-house. The company has rebranded the firm as Innova Securities Limited, which will now operate as Trove’s licensed broker-dealer. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but the strategic intent is clear: more control, fewer dependencies.

Since launching in 2018, Trove built its platform by working with third-party broker-dealers, giving Nigerians access to local and international equities without running afoul of regulations. That model helped the company scale quickly. But as its user base grew and products expanded, Trove says it needed tighter control over trade execution, compliance, and governance. According to CEO Oluwatomi Solanke, owning a fully SEC-licensed broker-dealer allows the company to move faster and take direct responsibility for the entire trading experience.

The acquisition also gives Trove greater oversight of service quality, settlement timelines, and regulatory processes — areas that directly shape user trust. Some UCML staff, especially within compliance and operations, have moved over to Innova Securities, ensuring continuity and institutional knowledge. Existing user accounts will remain active and be migrated gradually, while new users will be onboarded directly under Innova from day one.

Zooming out, Trove’s move fits neatly into a broader pattern playing out across Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem. Startups are no longer content with just building apps; they want to own the pipes underneath. From Flutterwave’s acquisition of Mono to Paystack’s purchase of a microfinance bank, consolidation is becoming a strategy, not an exception. If January is anything to go by, 2026 might be the year Nigerian fintechs double down on owning their stack.

Venezuela Forecasts $1.4bn Oil Investments In 2026, Up 55%

    0

Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodriguez on Monday forecast a $1.4 billion bonanza from planned reforms to the oil sector aimed at drawing in foreign investors following the ouster of Nicolas Maduro.

Rodriguez projected oil investments would rise 55 per cent over 2025 after a bill ending decades of tight state control on the energy sector is adopted by parliament.

“Last year, investment came to nearly $900 million, and for this year, $1.4 billion in investments have been signed,” claimed Rodriguez, who succeeded Maduro after his January 3 overthrow by US special forces.

Rodriguez was addressing a business audience as part of public consultations on plans to throw open the oil sector to private investment.

“We must go from the country with the planet’s biggest (proven) reserves of oil to a giant in production terms,” Rodriguez argued.

The interim leader is under pressure from President Donald Trump to give US oil companies access to Venezuela’s rich crude deposits.

Trump backed her to take over from her former boss, Maduro, as long as she complies with his agenda.

Years of mismanagement and corruption drove Venezuela’s output down from a peak of over 3 million barrels per day (bpd) in the early 2000s to a historic low of 350,000 barrels daily in 2020.

It has since rebounded to around 1.2 million bpd.

The hydrocarbons bill currently before the National Assembly stipulates that private companies located in Venezuela would be able to extract oil without having to enter a joint venture with the state oil company PDVSA, which insisted on a majority stake.

Legislators endorsed it during a first reading last week and are expected to adopt it in the coming days.

French Lawmakers Pass Bill Banning Social Media For Under-15s

    0

French lawmakers have passed a bill that would ban social media use by under-15s, a move championed by President Emmanuel Macron as a way to protect children from excessive screen time.

The lower National Assembly adopted the text by a vote of 130 to 21 in a lengthy overnight session from Monday to Tuesday.

It will now go to the Senate, France’s upper house, ahead of becoming law.

Macron hailed the vote as a “major step” to protect French children and teenagers in a post on X.

The legislation, which also provides for a ban on mobile phones in high schools, would make France the second country to take such a step, following Australia’s ban for under-16s in December.

As social media has grown, so has concern that too much screen time is harming child development and contributing to mental health problems.

“The emotions of our children and teenagers are not for sale or to be manipulated, either by American platforms or Chinese algorithms,” Macron said in a video broadcast on Saturday.

Authorities want the measures to be enforced from the start of the 2026 school year for new accounts.

Former prime minister Gabriel Attal, who leads Macron’s Renaissance party in the lower house, said he hoped the Senate would pass the bill by mid-February so that the ban could come into force on September 1.

He added that “social media platforms will then have until December 31 to deactivate existing accounts” that do not comply with the age limit.

    ‘Destiny Of Our Country’

In addition to combating the impact of screens and social media on the mental health of young adolescents, Attal stressed that the measure would counter “a number of powers that, through social media platforms, want to colonise minds”.

“France can be a pioneer in Europe in a month: we can change the lives of our young people and our families, and perhaps also change the destiny of our country in terms of independence,” he said.

France’s public health watchdog ANSES said this month that social media such as TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram had several detrimental effects on adolescents, particularly girls, though it was not the sole reason for their declining mental health.

The risks listed include cyberbullying and exposure to violent content.

The legislation stipulates that “access to an online social networking service provided by an online platform is prohibited for minors under the age of 15”.

The draft bill excludes online encyclopedias and educational platforms.

An effective age verification system would have to come into force for the ban to become reality. Work on such a system is underway at the European level.

The hard-left France Unbowed’s (LFI) Arnaud Saint-Martin criticised the ban as “a form of digital paternalism” and an “overly simplistic” response to the negative impacts of technology.

On Monday, nine child protection associations urged lawmakers to “hold platforms accountable”, not “ban” children from social media.

Macron has also backed a ban on pupils having mobile phones in high schools.

In 2018, France banned children from using mobile phones in colleges, where they attended between the ages of 11 and 15.

Former prime minister Elisabeth Borne expressed reservations about the measure on Monday.

“It’s more complicated than that,” she told broadcaster France 2.

“We first need to make sure that the ban is properly enforced in middle schools.”

Morning Recap: Tax reforms fail to excite workers, Calvin Bassey’s father pleads for family reunion, other top stories

    0

In today’s big headlines, Nigerian workers say recent tax reforms have resulted in only marginal increases in take-home pay, while the Defence Headquarters has concluded its investigation into alleged coup plotters and will arraign the officers implicated.

In other developments, Calvin Bassey’s father has renewed his appeal for reconciliation with his children after 18 years, and Oyo State’s 50th anniversary opening ceremony went ahead without the Alaafin and Soun.

Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration are also awaiting a key ruling at the National Industrial Court in Abuja over their ongoing strike.

    Below are the top stories:

    1. Workers unimpressed with marginal salary rise after tax reforms

Many Nigerian workers have expressed disappointment with the outcome of recently implemented tax reforms, saying the changes have led to only modest increases in their take-home pay.

Under the new Personal Income Tax regime, individuals earning the national minimum wage or less are exempt, while others enjoy reduced Pay-As-You-Earn tax rates.

However, workers interviewed by The PUNCH said their January salaries reflected only small gains — in some cases just a few thousand naira — leaving many still struggling with high living costs.

    2. Military investigation ends: DHQ moves to arraign alleged coup plotters

The Defence Headquarters said it has concluded its investigation into alleged misconduct by some military officers, reports The PUNCH, and will arraign those identified before appropriate military judicial panels.

The probe, which began with the arrest of 16 personnel in October 2025 over alleged indiscipline and breaches of service regulations, uncovered cases against officers with allegations suggesting plots inconsistent with professional standards.

The DHQ said the arraignment will follow procedures under the Armed Forces Act and ensure fairness and due process.

2026 budget, constitution review top agenda as N’Assembly resumes

    0

The National Assembly will today resume plenary sessions with the scrutiny of President Bola Tinubu’s ₦58.47tn 2026 Appropriation Bill and amendments to Nigeria’s electoral laws topping its legislative agenda.

The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, stated that the upper and lower chambers would also expedite work on the review of the 1999 Constitution, assuring all that the document would be completed and ready for transmission to state legislatures by the first quarter of 2026.

Bamidele disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Monday, noting that committees in both chambers had already commenced detailed assessments of the revenue and expenditure estimates presented by President Tinubu to a joint session of the National Assembly on December 18, 2025.

He said, “Now that we have resumed plenary, we will devote quality time to the scrutiny and passage of the 2026 Appropriation Bill valued at ₦58.47 trillion. In both chambers, our committees are already looking deeply into the estimates of revenues and expenditures that President Bola Tinubu laid before the joint session of the National Assembly on December 18, 2025.

“The proposal is crucial to the growth, prosperity, and stability of our economy this year and even beyond, given its emphasis on consolidating the gains of the previous years.”

He said the budget, when enacted, would reinforce macroeconomic stability, deepen Nigeria’s global competitiveness, and translate economic growth into jobs, higher incomes, and improved living standards, while restoring the January-to-December budget cycle.

“The budget, when it finally becomes effective, will further reinforce our collective resolve to guarantee our nation’s macroeconomic stability, deepen her global competitiveness and translate economic growth to decent jobs, rising incomes and a better quality of life across the federation.

“This will help us restore and maintain a budget cycle that annually starts from January and ends in December. Achieving these ends might be tough, perhaps unattainable, given the bottlenecks we have experienced before now,” the lawmaker stated.

Bamidele linked improved funding prospects for the budget to recent fiscal reforms, including the enactment of the 2025 Tax Reform Act, which he said had recalibrated the nation’s fiscal space to reduce the tax burden on low-income earners while placing more responsibility on high-income earners.

“Unlike previous years, we have significantly reformed our fiscal space to reflect our socio-economic realities. From the reforms of our fiscal space, we believe funding our budget will no longer be a challenge, and our budget deficit will definitely begin to shrink year by year,” he said.

    Related News

Beyond the budget, the Senate Leader said the National Assembly was prioritising amendments to the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the aim of guaranteeing credible, transparent, and secure polls.

He said the proposed Electoral Bill, 2025, contained over 20 major innovations, including voting rights for inmates, early release of election funds to INEC, electronically generated voter identification, real-time transmission of polling unit results, standardised delegates for indirect primaries, stricter voter registration requirements, and tougher sanctions for electoral offences.

“Apart from the 2025 Appropriation Bill, we are prioritising the delivery of an electoral governance framework that will guarantee a credible and transparent process in the 2027 general elections. We have started the review of the Electoral Act, 2022, clause by clause, to achieve this end.

“The Bill introduces a system of consequences to our nation’s electoral regime. This provision forecloses the possibility of impunity when electoral offences are established,” he noted.

On constitutional amendments, Bamidele said technical sessions and public hearings had been concluded, adding that the report of the exercise would be laid before the Senate by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, before the end of the first quarter.

“The review of the 1999 Constitution is also at its peak. Before the first quarter elapses, the Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman, Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Senator Barau Jibrin, will lay the report of the exercise before the Senate,” the Senate Leader assured.

He stressed that the final phase of the process would require approval by at least two-thirds of the 36 state Houses of Assembly, underscoring the central role of sub-national legislatures in effecting constitutional alterations.

Reflecting on the lifespan of the 10th National Assembly, Bamidele noted that only 16 months remained out of its constitutionally prescribed 48 months, pledging that lawmakers would intensify reforms touching on governance, elections, and economic diversification.

He said, “At this highly critical time, when what happens in other parts of the world now dictates the direction of our economy and polity, the onus rests much more upon us than at any time in history to reinforce our constituents’ trust in their representatives, in the National Assembly and in their fatherland.”
