SOKOTO — The leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State has taken a decisive turn, as Alhaji Bello Isiyaku (Keegan) publicly reaffirmed his position as the legitimate state chairman.
Keegan made the declaration on Wednesday during a press conference at the University Guest House, appearing alongside 25 of the 33 state executive members, signaling a significant shift in the ongoing power struggle. The majority support from the executive members strengthened Keegan’s position against rival leadership claims within the party.
Addressing journalists, Keegan dismissed allegations that he was suspended for participating in the 2023 governorship race without authorization, calling the claims “false, malicious, and politically engineered.” He emphasized that no constitutionally recognized organ of the party had removed him from office, noting that only the national leadership has the power to suspend a sitting state chairman.
“I remain a founding pillar of ADC in Sokoto, one of the earliest figures who worked tirelessly to build the party’s structure and visibility across the state. Those who claim to have removed me are only attempting what they have no power to execute,” he said, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the party.
The press conference also saw the formal expulsion of three state executive members accused of misconduct and undermining party cohesion. Those expelled include:
Yusuf Alkali, State Secretary
Abba Galadima, Assistant State Financial Secretary
Murtala Aliyu, State Publicity Secretary
The executives cited anti-party activities, breach of trust, and actions capable of destabilizing party unity as grounds for their expulsion. They stated that the decision followed thorough internal assessments confirming violations of ethical conduct expected of ADC officers.
In their resolution, the executive committee reaffirmed their loyalty to Keegan as the legitimate state chairman and pledged to uphold the ADC constitution, democratic norms, and disciplinary regulations without compromise.
The leadership also issued a stern warning to Umar Faruk Muhammad to desist from parading himself or acting under any guise as state chairman, describing such actions as deceptive, unlawful, and damaging to the party’s image.
Members and supporters across all wards were urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and steadfast as the party embarks on a reorganization process aimed at restoring internal harmony and confidence.
With both authority and numbers visibly tilting toward Keegan’s camp, the Sokoto ADC power struggle has entered a defining phase, setting the stage for a potential turning point in the party’s future within the state.
