American rap icon Trevor Smith Jr, popularly known as Busta Rhymes, has sparked conversations online after hinting at plans to settle down in Nigeria, including the possibility of finding a wife, during his performance in Lagos.
The 53-year-old American rapper made the remarks on Friday while performing at the Detty December Fest held at Ilubirin, Ikoyi, marking his return to Lagos for the first time in 15 years.
Addressing the crowd, Busta Rhymes, known for his fast rapping and energetic performances, described the trip as deeply personal, explaining that it went beyond performing on stage.
“Even though it took 15 years, we are home. This trip was special to me because it wasn’t just about a show. I’m looking for a home here, I’m looking for property.
“I’m thinking about looking for a wife so that when I stop working, I can settle down here. But there will be a few Nigerian slash Jamaican grandchildren,” the award-winning musician said.
His comments drew loud cheers from fans and quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the night.
Busta Rhymes is not married and has never been married.
However, he is a father of six children with four different women. His children include sons T’Ziah, T’Khi and Trillian, as well as daughters Mariah, Cacie and Miracle.
One of his most notable long-term relationships was with Joanne Wood, with whom he shares three children.

Busta Rhymes rose to fame in the early 1990s. He has sold over 20 million records and released 12 studio albums.
In 2025, he received major honours, including a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, highlighting his impact on hip-hop culture.
