Ondo NULGE protests, seeks LG autonomy

Legislative business could not hold at the Ondo State House of Assembly on Tuesday as members of the state branch of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees staged a protest in front of the Assembly complex, Akure, over the issue of local government autonomy.

It was gathered that the leadership of the Assembly had allegedly planned to vote against the LG Autonomy Bill before them during their plenary session scheduled to hold on Tuesday.

The protesters, who blocked the main entrance of the House, were led by the Ondo State President of the NULGE, Bola Taiwo.

They wielded placards with different inscriptions such as ‘No autonomy, no election in Ondo State in the forthcoming general election,’ among others.

Speaking during the protest, Taiwo urged the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, not to toe the path of other states that opposed the autonomy.

Two lawmakers -Mr Feyide Oluyede and Tomide Akinribido representing Ose and Ondo West State Constituencies respectively- showed up to address the protesters.

Akinribido said there was no iota of truth in the allegation that the Assembly was under pressure to reject local government autonomy.
