The 27-year-old is still expected to train at Carrington on Monday as United face Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening.
It is not clear if the Portuguese international will play against Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League title chasers.
Interim manager Ralf Rangnick will be speaking to the press on Monday afternoon and is expected to give an update on Fernandes then.
Fernandes has been a vital player for United since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, scoring 49 goals in 120 appearances in all competitions.
He won four Premier League Player of the Month awards in 2020 alone, becoming the first player to achieve the feat in a calendar year.
