The Ekiti State Police Command, yesterday said it has arrested seven suspects in possession of various weapons, disturbing the peace of the state capital.
The arrest of the suspects followed the mayhem allegedly caused my members of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday.
The suspects are Olokunlade Olamide (male), 22; Ogunleye Oluwaseun (male) 32; Alabi Adebo (male) 32; Ajidaro Akin (male) 39; Karimu Mutiu (male) 20; Yakubu Mohammed (male) 32; and Ogundipe Sunday (male) 30.
In a statement issued yesterday by the Commissioner of Police, Bello Ahmed, through the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, the Command revealed that it received a distress call at about 2:30pm and swung into action.
The mayhem which disrupted the peace of Mugbagba area of Ado-Ekiti, a business hub, was said to have been a result of battle for supremacy between NURTW and RTEAN members, resulting in destruction of property and breach of public peace.According to Ikechuckwu, the police were able to arrest suspects and recovered dangerous weapons.
The exhibits are two double barrel guns, three expended cartridges, four cutlasses, one jack knife and one Suzuki mini bus with plate number Ekiti KER 509 XA.
While promising effective and swift investigations, he said: “Soon investigation will be concluded and all the suspects will be charged to court for prosecution.’’
The Command appreciated members of the public, who alerted police of the incident, saying it helped to secure lives and properties and ultimately restored peace to the affected areas.It also urged citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious or untoward happenings to the nearest police station.
