The lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, has said that he will honour the invitation by the police.
This comes after the Kogi State Police Command invited him for questioning following the engagement by men in his convoy with the police in an alleged gun battle which led to the injury of one officer.
Senator Melaye on Friday accused the police of shooting at his convoy on his way to inaugurate a project at his constituency on Thursday in Kogi.
Although the police have denied the allegations that its personnel attacked the convoy of the lawmaker, Senator Melaye explained that he was riding in a convoy of about 20 vehicles headed for a scheduled event in the state, and his cars were the second and third having being led by the out riding Hilux vehicle of the officers of the Civil Defense Corp.
The lawmaker questioned the police’s claims that the last vehicle on his convoy shot at them.
He said, “ I wonder why they shot at my cars which were in the second and third on the convoy?’
He insisted that there were several military and police checkpoints on the way to his destination.
Senator Melaye said the attack is a clear indication of the intent that they plan to kill him adding that his bulletproof vehicles which were third in the convoy and the gunshots on the cars were directed at the owner’s sitting side of the cars.
Meanwhile, the Police Kogi State Commissioner, Ali Janga reacting to the allegations as untrue, said the police opened fire in defence of a purported shooting by some individuals in the lawmaker’s convoy.

“Unidentified civilians inside (a vehicle in the convoy) decided to open fire on my policemen. You don’t expect the police to fold their arms; eventually they replied and opened fire too,” he said.
“Dino has been going around telling people that he was attacked by unidentified people armed men; no, they were real police officers.
“They were there on assignment. Nobody attacked Dino but rather, his convoy attacked by policemen and they repelled,” Janga insisted.
The Senator alleged that he wrote to the Kogi state police command seeking protection for the events he had planned to stage in the state and also sent two letters which were transmitted by his lawyer, Mr Ricky Tarfa (SAN) but no provision was made by the police, except the ones provided by the Civil Defense Corps.
He further stated that after the scenario which played out on the road, there was another attack on his house in his hometown of Aiyetoro, in Kogi state where sporadically gunshots rend the air.
He alleged that the police officers led the ordeal and described the situation as an assassination attempt on his life by some officers of the Nigerian Police.
He also referred to the allegations by the police as “false and illogical.”
The Senator told Channels Television that he will respond to the invitation by the police.
“I will honour the invitation of the Kogi state police command on Thursday despite the attempts on my life,” he said.
