Plateau Assembly speaker impeached

The speaker of Plateau State House of Assembly speaker, Peter Azi was impeached on Wednesday, 13 days after the first attempt.
There had been unsuccessful attempts in the past to remove Azi from office for trying to prolong the tenure of transition committee chairmen in the 17 local government councils of the state which expired on Thursday, June 28.
On June 28, a lawmaker representing Mikang constituency, Na’anlong Daniel moved a motion of urgency on the tenure of the transition of chairmen. The motion was supported by Simon Kudu of Irigwe/Rukuba constituency.
Members had a voice vote on the tenure extension on July 4. Tenure of 15 out of the 17 local government committee chairmen was extended. Two chairmen did not have such benefit.
“By this voice vote, the House has approved the extension of the TICs tenure in 15 out of the 17 local government areas of the state by one month,” Azi said.
However, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the assembly staged a walk-out from the chamber.
Azi, a member representing Jos North West Constituency was impeached alongside the Majority Leader Hon.
