It’s been 10 years since “Arugba” —a movie about a king of an imaginary town who brays against corruption while carefully prosecuting economic reform and handily welcoming foreign investors — was released. The leadership portrait emerges as the key sub plot in the romance between Arugba – the virgin who carries the sacrificial calabash during the Osun Osogbo festival – and a young dancer intent on winning her. Other plot points include Adetutu’s blossoming musical career, and her growing fondness for a gifted artist named Makinwa, which places a strain on Adetutu’s relationship with the other members of her all female musical group.Set against the backdrop of a corrupt society seeking rebirth, the movie won the 2009 Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Costume Design and Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Nigerian Film. The movie featured Bukola Awoyemi, Segun Adefila, Bukky Wright, Peter Badejo, Kareem Adepoju and Dele Odule. The popular dance sequences in the movie were choreographed by Segun Adefila and performed by the Crown Troupe of Africa.Since “Arugbo,” Tunde Kelani has directed movies such as “Dazzling Mirage,” “Maami,” and “Sidi Ilunije.
