By Richard Jideaka, Abuja: Former Nigeria Under-17s coach and now coach of Sudanese top side Al Khartoum FC Emmanuel Amuneke has hailed the Super Eagles for making the quarter-finals of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco even as he tipped the team for greater things, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Amuneke who has settled down quickly with his new club with two pre-season victories over Shabia FC and FC Karcoj Sporting said the Super Eagles would get better and “with little luck, can cart home the trophy”.
“I watched the Eagles matches and I am of the view that they were not at their best and yet they managed to get results that enabled them to top their group ahead of former champions Libya. I believe this team can go all the way with more efforts from the players,” Amuneke, who won the Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994 as a player, told CSN.
“I am also impressed with the standard of play in this tournament. All the teams have shown remarkable improvement and I won’t be surprised if some players from this tournament make their country’s World Cup squads.”
On his Sudanese club who beat Shabia 4-0 last Saturday and Karcoj Sporting 2-0 on Wednesday (today) Amuneke expressed satisfaction with the progress of his club, adding that they would be hard to contain in the second stanza of the Sudanese league.
“I am happy with the manner the boys have keyed in to my coaching philosophy and aside from keeping clean sheets in our two friendly games, we have also been able to score goals. It is still a work in progress and I believe we will be ready when the league resumes,” the former African Footballer of the Year, who coached the Golden Eaglets to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile in 2015, added.
