Sri Lanka Unveil New Coach Hathurusingha

Sri Lanka. Photo: Dibyangshu SARKAR / AFPFormer Sri Lankan Test opener Chandika Hathurusingha formally took over as head coach of the national team on Wednesday, challenging his new charges to up their game by two or three levels.
Cricket administrators have come under intense criticism as the national team’s failures reached new lows. Sri Lanka won just five out of 29 ODIs played in 2017 with five players taking charge of the captaincy.
Hathurusingha’s reputation sky-rocketed with success as head coach of Bangladesh during his three-year tenure. He also had coaching stints with Sri Lanka ‘A’, United Arab Emirates and New South Wales.
For Hathurusingha, returning as head coach would prove his critics wrong. Sri Lanka cricket sacked him as the assistant coach to the national team in 2010 despite pleas by then captain Kumar Sangakkara for him to remain involved in the setup.
The 49-year-old played 26 tests and 35 ODIs for Sri Lanka, averaging 29.62 and 20.90 respectively in each format.
