In UK: Theresa May appoints Tracey Crouch as minister of loneliness

The appointment was announced following the death of Jo Cox, a former UK parliament memberkilled at an EU referendum The United Kingdom’s prime minister, Theresa May, has appointed Tracey Crouch as Britain’s first Minister of Loneliness. This is aimed at tackling problems associated with the mental health and social health issues experienced by people living in the UK.  The new role which was announced on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, was facilitated by the late Jo Cox, a former member of Britain’s parliament who was killed at an European Union referendum.”Jo Cox recognised the scale of loneliness across the country and dedicated herself to doing all she could to help those affected,” May mentioned in a statement according to the BBC News. The appointee, Crouch who is 42 years old, hopes to use her position to address the problems of isolation encountered by nine million occupants of the UK. This will be done “across political parties,” says the BBC.  In Nigeria, it was a totally opposite reaction when Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, appointed his sister, Ogechi Ololo as the Commissioner for Happiness & Couples’ Fulfillment. In their reaction, the citizens questioned the seriousness of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party member who had previously erected a statue of South Africa’s president, Jacob Zuma, in Owerri, the state capital.ALSO READ: Nigerians roast Gov. for appointing sister Commissioner”Ololo’s appointment was perceived as a pointer to the fact that individuals occupying positions of authority in government favour relationships over competence in their attempt to appoint personnel for specific roles. Governor Okorocha in particular has a reputation for inviting members of his family to assume positions in his administration. An Owerri-based blogger, Cyril Njoku, who attended the investiture ceremony of new Imo State servicemen agreed with this assertion in a chat with the Premium Times News.“His Son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, is the Chief of Staff. His wife, Nkechi Rochas Okorocha, is the Chairman of Imo Amnesty Committee with a huge budget.“His father-in-law and the current Minister of State for Education, Anthony Anwuka, was the former Secretary to Imo State Government,” he said.Modernisation in Nigeria, often regarded as the Giant of Africa, has only reached the corridors of technology and social awareness but not in the government which is characterized by policies considered backward and a slow reaction to major issues. The citizens of the country consider the building of a statue of South Africa’s president, Jacob Zuma, in Imo State an example of initiatives that have failed to reflect the purpose of having a representative in government. One will expect the focus of the elected to be a desire to serve the electorates by making decisions expected to bring them nice privileges as opposed to wasting their resources.

Britain has appointed a new minister of loneliness to battle the ongoing epidemic of loneliness afflicting senior citizens.
Britain has appointed a new minister of loneliness to battle the ongoing epidemic of loneliness afflicting senior citizens.
Psychology studies have suggested that loneliness can be a greater public health hazard than obesity or smoking.
Britain has appointed a minister for loneliness to take forward the work of murdered lawmaker Jo Cox and tackle the isolation felt by more than one in 10 people in the UK.
Sports minister Tracey Crouch will take on the new role, in addition to her existing job, and develop a strategy to address the problem, which research has linked with dementia, early mortality and high blood pressure.
Past studies have found chronic loneliness to be more life-threatening than obesity and smoking. Psychologists have come to call the global trend of isolationism a “loneliness epidemic.”
“We should all do everything we can to see that, in Jo’s memory, we bring an end to the acceptance of loneliness for good,” British Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement. “For far too many people, loneliness is the sad reality of modern life.”
Cox was murdered by a right-wing extremist in 2016, after being in parliament for little more than a year.
The majority of people over 75 live alone, and about 200,000 older people in the UK have not had a conversation with a friend or relative in more than a month, according to government data.
Most doctors in Britain see between one and five patients a day who have come in mainly because they are lonely, according to the Campaign to End Loneliness, a network tackling the health threat that isolation poses to the elderly.
The Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness, which the 41-year-old lawmaker set up shortly before her death, had called for a minister to be appointed to lead action on the issue.
“Jo would be over the moon,” her husband, Brendan Cox tweeted.
Crouch’s appointment follows other steps Britain has taken toward combatting loneliness. Five years ago, the first Silver Line center opened, giving lonely senior citizens a hotline to call when they want to socialize. Collectively, the centers receive more than 10,000 calls a week.
More than 3,000 volunteers work at the Silver Line, and many make follow-up calls to people battling the most extreme cases of loneliness.

EFCC arraigns dismissed judge on fraud charges

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday at an Ikeja High Court, arraigned Justice Mohammed Yunusa, a suspended justice of the Federal High Court Lagos on charges of corruption.
Justice Yunusa was arraigned alongside Esther Agbo, a staff in the law chambers of Mr Rickey Tarfa (SAN).

The prosecution alleged that Yunusa collected a gratification of N1.5 million from Tarfa for the purpose of giving favourable rulings and judgments in the cases.
The judge is also being accused of receiving N750, 000 from Mr Joseph Nwobike (SAN), between March and September, 2015, to get “favourable” judgment in cases.

The prosecutor noted that the offences are in violation of Sections 64(1)(a) and 97(3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
After the charges were read, counsel to justice, Yunusa Mr I. Mohammed requested for bail for the judge on self-recognisance.
“We have filed a bail application dated Dec. 12 and on Jan. 9, we have served the EFCC, seeking bail on self-recognisance,” Mohammed said.
Counsel to Agbo, Mr John Odubela (SAN) the second defendant asked the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms because she’s a nursing mother.
“We will be asking the court for bail for the second defendant on the grounds that she is a nursing mother who just gave birth via cesarean section,” he said.
The presiding judge, Justice Sherifat Solebo in a ruling, granted Yunusa bail on self-recognisance while Agbo was granted one million naira bail with two sureties in like sum.
Solebo adjourned the case until Feb. 20 for trial.

Governor Wike spoke during a security meeting at the ONELGA Council Secretariat Pavilion. The governor was accompanied by service commanders.

A top official of the Department of State Security (DSS) on Wednesday revealed how Don Waney, kidnap kingpin was tracked to his hideout in Enugu.Waney allegedly masterminded the killings of 23 worshipers on New Year’s Day, in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of  Rivers. The source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on condition of anonymity on Wednesday that the operation that led to his death was successful and averted further bloodshed in the state. The informant said the decision to swoop on Waney was taken after he ordered his men to carry out killings of innocent residents of Omoku town.“We intercepted Waney’s phone conversation he had with one of his lieutenant in which he ordered them to attack schools, hospitals, places of worship, marketplaces and other targets.“The killing and maiming of innocent residents of Omoku, including specific targets were scheduled to take place on January 8.“When we heard their plan to execute innocent citizens – which to us was the last straw – we decided to inform the Army about a joint operation to avert the killings.“This eventually led to the joint operation at his hideout in Enugu leading to his death and that of his two gang members. The DSS operative said that Waney was under intense DSS surveillance for over a year. The source said the New Year killings started after Waney sent some of his members to assassinate his third-in-command; but failed after the target escaped his apartment with gunshot wounds.According to the source, the killer squad later killed his wife and other close relatives and, thereafter, proceeded to kill five other persons over an existing feud with one of the gang members.“Some of the people who were killed died from stray bullets during the operation by the murderous gang.“It was easy to monitor Waney because we had our agent on a constant watch that gave us in-depth knowledge of his where about and activities.“Waney had companies that he used as fronts. He used one of these companies to front for surveillance jobs and leak repairs for a major oil company.“We know where his family stayed; we know that his boys camped at a forest in Imo state from where they usually launched their operation.“Waney was always hiding in Enugu and Ogoja (Cross River). He bought a car in Imo state and took it to Enugu – as part of his plans to change his identity,” the source revealed.NAN learned that the ash coloured Lexus ES330 salon car is currently parked at DSS premises in Port Harcourt. The source said that Waney had more than 30 active fighters and many volunteers who allegedly worked for top politicians in the state. It said that Waney’s accounts at First Bank and Unity Bank had been frozen and would be forfeited to the Federal Government at the end of the investigation.“The banks are fully cooperating with an ongoing investigation which would unravel his financial transactions from the time the accounts where opened,” the source added.NAN learned the deceased militant leader had more than N700 million at some undisclosed banks which is currently being monitored.Waney and his second-in-command, Ikechukwu Adiele, and another suspected gang member, Lucky Ode were killed by security forces in Enugu and their corpses paraded at 6 Division Nigerian Army Port Harcourt on Jan. 7.Waney and his gang members received amnesty from the Rivers Government in 2016 but later reneged on the terms of the amnesty deal.

Ighalo Not Moving To Premier League, Says Changchun Yatai

Prolific Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo will not be leaving Changchun Yatai and reports linking him with a return to the Premier League are “fake news”, the Chinese club says.
The forward was a regular goal scorer in the first half of his spell at English side Watford before moving to the Chinese Super League (CSL) with Changchun a year ago for a reported 20.9 million pounds ($29 million).
The 28-year-old went on to hit 15 goals in 27 CSL games, sparking speculation in European media that he could return to England’s top flight, with West Brom reportedly among those interested in him.
But Changchun chairman Liu Yuming has angrily quashed those claims, saying in quotes published on the club’s website: “I’m here to offer a piece of advice to whoever has bad intentions toward Yatai — we will take legal action when it is necessary and we will pursue their legal responsibilities for making up fake news.”
“We have excellent forwards such as Ighalo, is there any need to bring in another forward? Even if we do get someone in, it will be a midfielder,” Liu added, also denying that the CSL club are in for CSKA Sofia’s Brazilian striker Fernando Karanga.
“We don’t even know his name, let alone be interested,” said Liu.
