Batistuta: Sampaoli Shouldn’t Pick Names For Argentina World Cup Squad

Argentina legend, Gabriel Batistuta, has tasked Jorge Sampaoli to pick players who are in great form and not names for La Albiceceste’s  2018 FIFA World Cup squad.
Argentina  will face Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria in group D at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Batistuta who represented Argentina at three FIFA World Cups in 1994,1998 and 2002, struck 52 times in 77 appearances for La Albiceleste in an international career that spanned 11 years, also warned that Sampaoli’s squad lacks reliable defenders who can help win the World Cup.
“I’m worried that there’s no solid team in place. I just hope that the coach realises this because what we have seen is an unsettled team especially in terms of result,” Batistuta was quoted on Mundo Albiceleste.
“I think Argentine footballers are great but there’s need to work in the defence and there’s also need to prepare well for the World Cup. If they do, they can have a great tournament.
“The players that should play for Argentina are the ones in their best form and not names.”
“We are going to the World Cup that lasts for a month and three weeks. We can’t play with just names. If that’s the case Diego Maradona Mario Kempes and Ubaldo Filol will still be playing.
“As far as Mascherano is concerned it’s left for the coach to decide but what I can tell you is that we can’t go to the World Cup with just names. We won’t do anything if we do. If names are in form, great, if not lets set up a team.”
“I think they can give more individually and collectively.”
The Fiorentina legend also slammed Juventus striker Paulo Dybala for saying it’s difficult playing alongside Lionel Messi.
“It’s very difficult to understand that anyone could say it’s difficult to play with Messi. He (Dybala)  should not have said it. It was an unfortunate comment.”

Svitolina Eyes Grand Slam Success After Singapore Triumph

Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina kisses her winning trophy after defeating Sloane Stephens of the US in their singles final match at the WTA Finals tennis tournament in Singapore on October 28, 2018. Roslan RAHMAN / AFP
A confident Elina Svitolina used a more assertive approach to produce a “statement” WTA Finals triumph in Singapore on Sunday, as the Ukrainian eyes elusive Grand Slam success next year.
Svitolina claimed the biggest title of her career with a tough 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sloane Stephens in two hours and 23 minutes.
Her aggressive style in the eight-player season finale was the backbone of her success, as she becomes the first athlete to go through the WTA Finals undefeated since Serena Williams in 2013.
“That’s definitely a good statement for myself,” Svitolina told reporters. “The third set really showed that I was mentally tough.
“I think I have nothing to prove anymore to anyone.”
The 24-year-old has never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam but is determined to build on her Singapore conquest, which also included defeating defending champion Caroline Wozniacki.
“This is the biggest title of my career. I played against top players and the best players in the world, and I played great tennis,” she said.
“This really shows that I can play great tennis and definitely is going to bring me lots of confidence.”
Her victory over Stephens was her ninth straight finals win and 13th from 15 overall.
“I know that I have won lots of finals, but for me every final is a big challenge,” she says. “Not everything worked in the first set, but I fought back and that’s what brought me the win today. I’m very proud of this.”
Svitolina split with coach Thierry Ascione in October and worked with Andrew Bettles in Singapore but said she would look at her options during the off-season.
“I don’t want to take a person and then split in two weeks. So it’s a big decision,” she said.
Svitolina could rise three spots to world number four on the rankings after capturing her fourth title of the year.

Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal : How Costa ended Europa League dream for Wenger

Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal: Diego Costa killed Arsene Wenger’s last hope of a glorious Arsenal farewell as his goal sent Atletico Madrid through to the Europa League final on Thursday.

Wenger’s 250th European fixture with Arsenal also to proved to be his last, decided by a typically ruthless finish from Costa, who delivered the sort of barnstorming display defenders must have nightmares about.
Arsenal’s defence, fragile and nervous throughout, were particularly susceptible and this 1-0 defeat, 2-1 on aggregate, means Wenger’s final season in charge will end with his team missing out on Champions League qualification for a second year in a row.
For all his domestic achievements, Wenger will also depart without a European trophy to his name and it remains to be seen how sitting outside the continent’s premier tournament will affect Arsenal’s pursuit of a new coach, and players, this summer.
More immediately, there was the concerning sight of Laurent Koscielny being carried off on a stretcher in the 12th minute after the defender went down, with nobody near him, clutching his left Achilles.
Arsenal and France now face an anxious wait, with the start of the World Cup just over a month away.
Koscielny’s exit made a tough task all the more difficult for Arsenal, who were always going to be up against it at the Wanda Metropolitano, where Atletico have not lost in the league all season and not conceded a goal since January.
It was perhaps also telling that Costa’s physicality and Atletico’s defensive rigour ultimately proved decisive, two qualities Wenger’s Arsenal in recent years have so lacked.
Costa was hunting Arsenal’s back four from the outset as he wrestled past Koscielny, knocked over Nacho Monreal before firing wide with only David Ospina to beat.
Koscielny was substituted soon after, replaced by Calum Chambers, but Arsenal enjoyed one of their best spells midway through the half, dominating possession and reducing Atletico to a series of rushed clearances.
– Clinical Costa –
At the back, however, they were shaky, as Ospina had balls booted out of his grasp by his teammates on more than one occasion while their passing out of the back was too often careless.
By the end of the half, Atletico had regained the ascendancy and in injury-time, they struck. Granit Xhaka’s weak header put Arsenal on the back foot and Antoine Griezmann threaded through to Costa.
He held off Hector Bellerin with ease before coolly finishing past Ospina.
Arsenal came again after the interval. Aaron Ramsey bundled his way through but the ball would not fall for him six yards out while Mesut Ozil flashed too sumptuous deliveries across the face of goal.
Griezmann could have put the tie to bed after Costa had turned Shkodran Mustafi inside out but the defender recovered just in time to block.
A vintage Costa performance would not be complete without a scuffle and he provided it when Mustafi tried too enthusiastically to grab the ball off him for a free-kick.
Both players were booked and when Costa was substituted soon after, the striker was given a standing ovation.
Arsenal piled forward late on in search of an equaliser but in truth, their night ended without them really creating a clear-cut chance.
When the final whistle blew, Wenger marched straight down the tunnel as around him, Atletico’s celebrations began.

Arsenal Snap Up Aubameyang, Mahrez In City’s Sights

Aubameyang and Mahrez PHOTOS: AFP
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund for a club record fee of £56 million (63.7 million euros, 79.2 million euros) on Wednesday, in the biggest deal so far on transfer deadline day.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger — who last August kept the football world on tenterhooks as he held out selling Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City because he failed to secure Thomas Lemar from Monaco — did not wait until the last minute to land the Gabon striker.
Wenger persuaded the Arsenal board to pay more for the 28-year-old than the £46.5 million they shelled out for Frenchman Alexandre Lacazette last August.
Dortmund have eyed up a six-month loan move for Belgian international Michy Batshuayi from champions Chelsea, who have stipulated there will be no option to buy at the end of that period.
“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has joined us from Borussia Dortmund on a long-term contract for a club-record fee,” the statement from Arsenal said.
The club described him as “one of the world’s most highly-rated strikers”.
“He scored 98 goals in 144 Bundesliga games for Dortmund and had a hand in 172 goals in 213 matches in all competitions for his former club,” it continued.
Aubameyang’s arrival should see French veteran Olivier Giroud completing the musical chairs by signing for Chelsea even though Wenger was loathe to let him move to a rival as Sanchez joined Manchester United earlier this month.
However, the French striker is keen to stay in London as he seeks regular first team action to secure his place in France’s World Cup squad.
Surprise Mahrez bid
Aubameyang will alleviate the pressure on Lacazette although he would be ineligible for the Europa League having already played in the Champions League this campaign.
Elsewhere runaway leaders Manchester City have lodged a surprise £60 million bid for 2016 champions Leicester City’s Algerian star Riyad Mahrez, who ignored manager Claude Puel’s pleas for him to stay by putting in a transfer request.
However, Leicester are unlikely to let the 26-year-old — who was a key player in their stunning title success in 2016 and who has returned to form this term after a dip last season — leave for less than £90 million.
City have lost influential Germany winger Leroy Sane for up to seven weeks with an ankle injury and with the club competing on four fronts Guardiola suggested he may require a replacement.
“Right now, it’s the same as (Alexis) Sanchez, it’s not the place to talk about it. It’s so difficult,” City manager Pep Guardiola said on Tuesday when asked about Mahrez.
“If things are not possible, then nothing is going to happen. We don’t have too much and we play every three days. We have to find solutions.”
It’s not just the top clubs involved in the frenetic last few hours of a January that apart from Sanchez becoming the highest-paid player in the league — on a reported pre-tax £500,000 a week — has seen City pay a record fee of £57 million for young French centre-back Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao.
Tottenham too are getting close to signing Brazilian Lucas Moura, who has fallen out of favour at French giants Paris Saint Germain with the arrivals of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
The 25-year-old has according to reports passed his medical and would be the fifth most expensive signing in the club’s history — PSG would like the majority of the £26.5 million fee paid up front.
Those fighting to remain in the cash-rich upper echelon will also get in on the act with Swansea — whose win over Liverpool saw them move out of the bottom three — seeking to bring Ghanaian striker Andre Ayew back to Wales.
The Swans are hoping to sign the 28-year-old for around £18million according to the London Evening Standard — having sold him to the Hammers for £20.5 million in 2016 — but the London side who have only Javier Hernandez as their one fit striker will want to bring in a replacement.
Watford’s long-time servant Troy Deeney could fill the void and is valued at £16 million to leave the club he has been with since 2010.
