Femi Jacobs: Actor talks about what inspired The Rise Platform, goal, and being an...

0

“African Psyche is broken and we have got to fix it. That’s what the Rise Platform is for” – Femi Jacobs tells Pulse. Nollywood actor Femi Jacobs has spoken to Pulse about his new platform, The Rise, which is aimed at having tranformative conversations on how people can gain control of themselves.According to the actor, for years, there have been events and conversations about how people can access finance or run a business, but nobody is talking about who will do all these things. With his upcoming event, “Spirituality, Creativity and Clarity,” Jacobs hopes to moderate conversations between people and their own hearts, have them own up to their own weaknesses, understand what they need to work on, and equip them with the power to do those things. Also popular on Twitter for his simple, yet profound posts, Jacobs talks about having an inspiring personality on social media platforms and how he ‘nourishes his mind.’ Read the full interview below:On what inspired the Rise PlatformIt sort of felt like we were doing a lot of talking, a lot of events, a lot of activities, but I still feel like there’s a part of the conversation we are missing, and it’s because we, perhaps, haven’t grasped the depth of our problems yet.We need to come to a point where we know that something has happened to our psyche as a people. Quite a lot of people are talking about the problem, talking about the symptoms of the problem; how corruption is very pervasive and how young people are not particularly worried about that. It’s like they [young people] are not getting it. There’s still a lot of entitlement mentality, a lot of assumptions about stuff that we think people know but they don’t know. There has been a culture shift and I feel that we are missing that part of the conversation. We are missing the fact that we are not gonna have a situation where people just behave right automatically. Something has happened. I mean, when we talk about things like patriotism, it’s a strange word. Isn’t it? Because a lot of people don’t understand how they can be faithful to a country like this. There’s that sense of internal alignment that is missing in our conversations, and trust me, I have been part of that conversation for a long time. I have been a public speaker and all we were telling people was how to be empowered, how to access finance, how to run a business. Nobody is talking about the who. Who is going to do all these things you are telling people to do? And how can people gain control of themselves? It’s a personal empowerment platform. I wanted to have transformative conversations, not just transnational ones. I want people to know how to gain control of themselves. I think that the first place you lose power – if you feel powerless – is in yourself. You lose the power to influence yourself – they call it self control – you are not going to have power with anyone. You’re just going to throw tantrums, you’re not really going to understand power, because power begins with yourself. And I believe that that part of the connection is broken. And I believe that if we built a platform for it where we begin to have these sort of conversations with people, we can have situations where we have tools, instruments, media and quotes on how we can moderate conversations between people and their own hearts, own up to their own weaknesses, understand what they need to work on, and equip them with the power to do those things, then we won’t have to do a lot more stuff on the surface.Because I believe that once the core is taken care of, then the surface will be taken care of. African Psyche is broken and we have got to fix it. That’s what the Rise Platform is for. On his upcoming event themed: Spirituality, Creativity & Clarity Spirituality is all that a person is – his essence – stripped of everything else. Stripped of his position, stripped of your banalities, your social standing, your followership on Instagram, your financial situation, even your family. Stripped of everything that’s external to you; spirituality is what is left, and that’s the source of everything. So when we say “Spirituality,” we are looking at the the real person, and unfortunately, not a lot of persons can adequately describe who that real person is.A lot of people have asked me, ‘oh, are you going to talk about Christianity?’ Your religion, whatever it is you practise, is a tool for refining that person I just described.Faith is a tool of the heart and soul because you can’t see it. So to even know that you even have a soul would require faith. So whatever faith you practice – Muslim, Buddhist, Christian or traditionalist – your connection to the intangible, is a tool for nurturing that core person. That’s what spirituality is about. We are about to strip everything out and perhaps let people come in contact with that person. That’s your authenticity. In fact, when God made people, that’s who he made. He made that thing that the person is, and that’s the core. That part made the mind and made the body. Because when you think about it, it was the clay that was formed. The clay didn’t become intestine, what gave it life was that core idea of who a person is. The Creative aspect of it is deeper than just inventing things. It’s deeper than arts, scripting, drawing or whatever it is that we do that we call creativity. It actually describes how we frame our reality from inside out, how we begin to implement what our life is about, our purpose, the idea of who we are, and all the other external things that we do.The Clarity part is, of course, our decision making. You’ve got to have enough wisdom and understanding of what you want to do with your life. Forget about Africa for a minute, forget about the global realities, the Geo-politics, let’s deal with that.Once we are able to capture these three things; the spiritual part, the creative part, and clear understanding of what you’re about, we are done. Trust me, that’s like 75% of the work. Once that’s done, everything else would start to fall in place, or out of place.Because when you’re clear on what you’re about, you don’t have to say ‘no,’ things would literally just fall off you. You would be in the right relationships, you would pick the right idea of what your mission is and the kind of profession or career you’re supposed to be in. All of those other decisions would be taken care of when you get clarity. That’s the conversation we want to jump-start on August 11. On having an inspiring presence on social mediaA lot of people know me as an actor, but I was almost 30 before I ever stood in front of a camera for the first time. So, describing me as an actor is missing the whole point. I cherish that privilege, I love the fact that I am able to do that, I like the fact that a lot of people connect to me at that level, I like the fact that I am able to win awards doing that, I really really cherish that. But that’s just the doing person. That’s just one of the things I did. I went to flying school, I started businesses, I was a musician from the time I was 14 years old, so all of those things are just the doing. The being is deeper than that. I mean, since I was eight years old, I left my parents and went to live with my uncle and there was not a lot of guidance or motivation. I would have been excused if I failed. It’s coming out in my book in September also called “Rise.”Nobody cared. Like, you went out, you came back when you liked [and] nobody asked, ‘Have you eaten?’ Nobody knows what’s going on. And I think that lack of a hovering presence around me sort of connected me to my inner self quite early.I was more introspected. A lot of people say, ‘You don’t go for events,’ ‘We don’t see you everywhere.’ It’s just a personality issue. I just was connected to who I was that early and I’m used to that voice. I know when it speaks to me. I am not trying to give myself credit but my life has been saved by that single ability that I was fortunate to develop that early. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to have this event. I wanted to spend time with people alone because I wanted them to be connected to that. People ask me, “Do you read books?” I don’t write what I read in books. Sometimes, when I do that, I just put a quote to it.What I write are the authentic feelings and thoughts of my own self. I hear these things early in the morning and I just put them out, and some of them are clarity issues. For instance, I have been through stuff for years, and all of a sudden, in retrospect, all of that would be captured in a single quote and I will cast my mind back to when I was going through that stuff, I never thought about it that way.But now I think about it and I’m like, ‘Okay, this is an authentic human experience.’ And when it’s an authentic human experience, it has a relationship with the principles that govern life. So what principle is this? And then I make that connection and I write it down, and then I take a little portion of it and I put it on Twitter.Twitter used to give us 140 characters and there was not a lot we could write in those days. I would just take a little bit, put it out there, and I would ask, ‘Would people get this thing?’ Then I would remember my literature class in school, then I would ask, ‘How do I phrase this in a way that people would understand?’I have knowledge of songwriting, so I would put a little bit of rhyme, a little bit of poetry, then I put it online. I’m grateful that connected with a lot of people. This started since 2008. So it has been 10 years of writing quotes on Facebook and Twitter. A lot of people send me messages and I’m glad that somehow, some people are gaining understanding from it.On having guest celebrity speakers at his eventWhat I am about to do has been on my mind for a while. I am just glad that I now think that I am ready to open myself up a bit more. If you want people to be vulnerable with you, you have to be vulnerable with them and share your story with them, and that’s what this platform is about. It’s a platform of stories, it’s a platform of conversations.Somebody asked, ‘Who else are you bringing?’ ‘Are you going to be the only person?’ – there’s this general understanding that actors are supposed to be ‘bleh.’No, it’s not that kind of event. This particular one is an intimate situation. There can only be 50 people in that room, and we are going to talk.I’m going to try and show people what I have done and organize how they too can experience it. On planning subsequent events outside Lagos, NigeriaThe way the platform is designed is such that each topic is a module of knowledge, so it’s transmutable. With one person, we can do it with one million persons. We can do it multimedia.I am already thinking about Abuja and Port Harcourt. I would have loved to have an event of 500 people at the same time, but I wanted it to be intense, because even I need to experience it again. The Rise Platform’s Spirituality, Creativity and Clarity event is scheduled to hold on August 11, 2018.

Nigerians speak on the just concluded Big Brother Naija show

0

By Juliet Ebirim
BBNaija is entertainment on another level – Baudex, Music entrepreneur
Miracle deserved to win. He won almost 90% of the arena games. He didn’t have a record of an outburst or serious fight. He was able to socialise and also get along with everyone and even those who were against him.
He was able to co-exist with them in the same house, without a major fight. The show was massive and entertaining… entertainment taken to a different level.
Miracle deserved to win because… – Daniel TrybeMan, Artiste Manager
I think BBNaija is a game of who is the fan’s favorite. Miracle came into the house with a distinct identity, “Pilot”.   That automatically made him become everyone’s favorite house mate especially the ladies. He deserved to win because he won the hearts of the ladies and everyone out there. Big Brother Naija was intriguing and will always have fans glued to the TV each year, because apart from football there’s no other show that brings us together in one accord.
My advice to the ex house-mates is: One year ago nobody knew who you were and one year after they won’t remember who you were, so please monetize your relationships, don’t be carried away by the collaborations, free photo shoots, club appearances etc .
I wanted   Tobi to win, but I’m happy Miracle won – Chris Onems, Radio Presenter
I think Miracle deserved to win. If you followed the show closely you would realize that he won most of the competitions while in the house and he is a person that observes very well before he takes actions. I think he is a very cool person so, he deserves the money most definitely.
I actually wanted Tobi to win the money but all the same, I was very happy that one of the two coolest guys in house won. Also, Miracle would use the money well to further his schooling, I think it is cool.
It was fun, but has no positive impact on the lives of viewers – Morakinyo Akinkunmi
In an episode of the show I watched, Miracle handled the task they were given very well, I just think God favored him. As for the show itself, it was just entertaining.   It had no impact on the life of those who watched it, so I’m not in support of its continuity. Miracle however deserved to win, but I would have preferred Lolu because he’s a cool guy and I like him.
The show has ended, but we are still entertained – Olawunmi Asama, Entrepreneur
Big Brother Naija ‘’Double Wahala’’ was entertaining though it got boring at some point. Even though the show has ended the buzz is still in the air and we are still entertained . Miracle really deserved to win ,from the beginning to the end of the show he was one of the real housemates. I wish all the contestants well in all their future endeavours.
The show is a total waste of time – Oyindamola Onifade-Johnson, Fashion Designer
From all the odds, Miracle seemed to know how to relate with his fans, he had a great story, nice personality, a lot of people were on his side and he was pleasant. It was a clear win for him! But I feel big brother is a total waste of time! It’s a way for youth to dwell in the spirit of idleness and laziness, it doesn’t teach anything meaningful. Although it positively showcased diverse personalities from different facets of life, exploring their potentials to the fullest. I liked Rico and Miracle the few times I watched though. But nevertheless they all showcased great potentials.
CeeC was the real “Double Wahala” – Victor Udoh, Media Personality
I actually wanted CeeC to win. I even lost some of my followers when I declared my support for her on my instagram page. She really portrayed the theme of this year’s edition ‘’Double Wahala”. She made the show exciting. She was very real in the house. Sentiments aside, I didn’t see anything special Miracle did in the house.
The games he won are just physical games anybody can win. If it was based on mental ability, Tobi would have won. Miracle is just lucky, but CeeC deserved to win. I love controversial people. Miracle never did domestic chores like cooking etc, in the house.
The show was well planned and scripted – Echezona
BBNaija was well   planned and scripted. They used CeeC to boost votes so as to get more money. You know CeeC was trending due to her attitude, which made people dislike her. BBNaija used her so people would vote more. More votes meant more money for the organisers. They played on the psyche and emotions of people so as to make money.

Hugh Masekela: Legendary Jazz musician is dead

0

The “Father of South African Jazz’ has passed away, after a battle with prostrate cancer. Legendary musician Bra Hugh Masekela is dead.According to a statement by the family, Masekela died “After a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer. He passed peacefully in Johannesburg, South Africa surrounded by his family.”
Masekela was a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer
and singer. He is considered the “father of South African jazz.” Masekela was known for his jazz compositions and for writing
well-known anti-apartheid songs such as “Soweto Blues” and “Bring
Him Back Home”. He is the father of American television host Sal
Masekela.Battle With Prostate CancerHugh’s battle with the illness has been public knowledge for a long time.  The musician’s team released a statement in October, 2017, saying he had been battling prostate cancer since 2008. The statement explained that the jazz veteran underwent eye surgery in March 2016, after the cancer spread, and had to go into theatre again in September 2016 as another tumour was discovered. In December, Masekela’s manager, Andrew Josh Georgiou told local media house, TshisaLIVE, that “he was fighting the disease with everything he had.” LegacyBra Hugh was born in KwaGuqa township in Witbank and began singing and playing the piano as a child. After seeing the film Young Man with a Horn when he was 14, Masekela began playing the trumpet. His first trumpet was given to him by Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, an anti-apartheid chaplain at St. Peter’s Secondary School. He soon mastered the instrument and by 1956 joined Alfred Herbet’s African Jazz Revue. Bra Hugh’s music was inspired by the turmoil that South Africa went through during apartheid and he said it was used as a weapon to spread political change.

AFRIMA 2018 receives record 8,009 entries

0

The fifth edition of All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, in partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC) has received 8, 009 songs and videos on its online portal as entry submission closed last Wednesday.
And according to organisers, this year’s submission sets a record as the highest number of entries from African artistes, music producers, songwriters, Disc Jockeys (DJs), video directors among others, since the inception of the most prestigious music event in Africa.
There was an increase in entries by 63% against the 2017 edition of 4,816 submitted entries. And out of the entries received this year, Eastern Africa tops with 45% followed by Western Africa with 34%.  Southern, Central and Northern Africa had 13%, 6% and 2% respectively.
Reacting to the development, the Acting Director of Social Affairs, African Union Commission, Mr. Machacha Shepande, congratulated Africa’s creative industry sector for participating in the 5th All Africa Music Awards Entry Submission campaign opened on May 25, 2018.
“The significant rise in the entries has also shown that African talents spread across the continent are awakening to the call to promote our cultural and creative industry continentally as well as to the world at large,”  said Shepande.
“The continent’s creative industry can only grow when we give relevant support to our creative talent and craft.
“Thus, the AUC calls upon AU Member States, and other stakeholders in the music industry to continue supporting its efforts in the development and promotion of the creative economy sector through the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) platform and other Pan-African cultural initiatives.”
Submission of entries closed on August 1, 2018 for works produced and released between August 1, 2017 and August 1, 2018. The entries will be screened by the 13-man jury of AFRIMA whose members are drawn from the five regions of Africa (two each from the Northern Africa, Southern African, Eastern Africa, Western Africa and Central Africa) and one African each represents the Diaspora – Europe and America and a representative of the African Union in the person of Mrs. Angela Martins who also is the Head of Culture of the African Union Commission.
And between August 7 and August 15, 2018, the jury would screen, categorise, grade, select and announce nominations into the thirty-eight (38) Regional and Continental categories of the award that will emerge winners of the AFRIMA 23.9 carat gold plated trophy.
The main events which include AFRIMA Music Village, Africa Music Business Summit and the 5th AFRIMA Awards will hold in November 2018. These events will be broadcast live to over 84 countries around the world.

Prince William to be brother Harry’s best man

0

Britain’s Prince Harry has finally asked Prince William to be his best man at his wedding next month, Kensington Palace confirmed Thursday, reinforcing the brotherly bond between them.
Prince Willaim- Prince Harry
Harry, 33, and 35-year-old William often poke fun at each other in public.
However, beneath the jocularity, the bond between them is strong, forged by the shock death of their mother Diana, princess of Wales in 1997 — and the support they offer each other is evident.
Even though William hitherto joked about Harry not having asked him, there was little doubt whom he would turn to for his big day.
William spoke about their connection last year — the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death — telling his wife Kate during an interview as Harry sat with them: “We have been brought closer because of the circumstances.
“We are uniquely bonded because of what we’ve been through.”
Harry performed best man duties at William and Kate’s wedding in 2011.
And when it is Harry’s turn at the altar, as he marries US former actress Meghan Markle, William will be at his side holding the wedding ring.
“Prince Harry has asked his brother the Duke of Cambridge to be his best man at his wedding to Ms Meghan Markle,” Kensington Palace said in a statement.
“The Duke of Cambridge is honoured to have been asked, and is very much looking forward to supporting his brother at St George’s Chapel, Windsor on May 19.”
The announcement comes three days after the birth of William and Kate’s third child on Monday, who joins four-year-old Prince George and Princess Charlotte, aged two, in the Cambridge family.
– Baby name guessing game –
William and Kate are yet to name the new prince and are giving little away as the public waits to find out what the baby, fifth in line to the throne, will be called.
William joined Harry and his fiancee on Wednesday in London at a service for Anzac Day, Australia and New Zealand’s national day of remembrance.
As William met Jerry Mateparae, New Zealand’s representative in London, he heard that the high commissioner wanted the new prince to be called Jerry.
“Jerry’s a strong name,” William said.
Kate and the baby are “very well” and “in good form, luckily”, he said, adding: “Sleeping’s going reasonably well so far, so he’s behaving himself which is good news.”
Bookmakers have Arthur as their favourite name, closely ahead of Alexander and James, then Louis, Albert, Philip and Henry, Harry’s proper name.
“Punters are rushing to get their bets on as the excitement builds,” said Harry Aitkenhead of bookmakers Coral.
“Arthur remains the favourite but we’re seeing a lot of money for Albert at the last minute.”
Australia’s representative Alexander Downer asked William: “Have you thought of the name Alexander for him?”
The duke replied: “Well, it’s funny you should say that. It’s a good name.”
George already has Alexander and Louis as his middle names, but the comment sent the odds on Alexander tumbling.
Alex Apati, of bookmaker Ladbrokes, said: “We’re not entirely convinced about this one given that George’s middle name is Alexander, but punters clearly think they’re onto something and we’ve had to respond accordingly.”
Markle is still to announce who will be her maid of honour.
William now has the responsibility of organising a stag party for his brother, as well as performing the best man’s speech.
Bookmakers have Switzerland and the Scottish Highlands as their favourite stag destination. Las Vegas — where Harry was infamously photographed partying naked in 2012 — is considered a remote shot.

Ibidunni Ighodalo’s milk of human kindness

0

Her eyes widened with concern. She looked at her staff and the team of volunteers. They had worked very hard and were ready to call it a day, but she could not ignore the passionate plea from these three women with babies. “We came here for these people. We cannot turn them back.” It was an appeal (not a command) from Mrs. Ibidunni Ighodalo, CEO of Elizabeth R, a top-notch events planning company and wife of Ituah Ighodalo, accountant and Senior Pastor of Trinity House. Persuading them with more soothing words, she moved ahead to make the women comfortable. Enveloping one of them in a hug, she took a baby from another.
It was the first edition of the Ibidunni Ighodalo Foundation baby shower charity tagged ‘Baby’s Day Out’ held at the Open Field of the Millennium Housing Estate, known as, Tinubu Estate in Ibeshe-Ikorodu, Lagos. Buses and trucks marked with the Trinity House and Elizabeth R insignia that carried various gift items were parked by the field. The handout from the IIF were in different categories. Pregnant women were given clothes, baby bath set, raw food items and a bag filled with baby toiletries. Though some mothers tried to shave some months off their grown babies, officials of IIF insisted on giving the baby clothes to the right recipient. The elderly women smiled home with one live chicken and food items. While children got gift bags from Santa Claus.
Ibidunni IghodaloThe IIF team led by Ibidunni and her husband, Pastor Ituah also visited five hospitals within Lagos; including Island Maternity, Lagos, Ajeromi General Hospital in Ajegunle, the Mother and Child Hospital at Amuwo Odofin, the General Hospital in Mushin and the Gbagada General Hospital. At every facility, they distributed gifts to the babies born on New Year Day and their mothers. They also paid bills for indigent patients.

Pulse Interview: Meet Wurld, the Nigerian born artist with a ”Contagious” message

0

Wurld is a talented Nigerian artist, who is being regarded as the next big thing with his genre of music which he calls Electro Fusion. WurlD’s sound is described as electro-fusion, his distinct feature goes beyond the dyed hair, but more into the power of his music and he says it is about time people hear more of him.The talented artist recently paid a visit to Pulse for an exclusive interview, where he speaks on his music, his return to Nigeria at this time, and a breakdown of what to expect from his upcoming EP ”Contagious” scheduled for release before the end of the year. For those hearing of Wurld for the first time, how will you describe yourselfMy name is Wurld, born in Nigeria, real name Sadiq Onifade, went to America, studied Computer science, I am a lover of arts, just sharing good content.Professionally, I have been doing music for about 7-8 years, but I have been into music and finding myself for about 13 years now, meeting people, producers and songwriters. On what inspired his decision to take to music and his choice of Electro Fusion”I could not stop myself from going into music, even back in school, I would go to talent shows right after my classes and really just stay involved and learn every day.I owed it to my parents to finish college, I have a masters degree as well, I made the transition more into music when I felt I could do it full time.”WurlD’s sound is described as electro-fusion, a progression from the regular house and EDM-inspired rhythm, which sees him infuse different genres to create his own sound, and he explains why;”So the electronic fusion, as a songwriter, I find myself in different rooms working with R&B artists, rappers, so it was really hard for me to do just one genre of music. It starts as far back as being a child listening to Fuji music, Juju, Afrobeats, so I was literally taking all these vibes in and so the fusion is just me putting it all together and that for me makes me satisfied.” Sharing his thoughts on the acceptance of Afrobeats in the United StatesThe likes of Wizkid and Davido have made giant strides into the American music industry over the past couple of years, performing at major concerts and having African music getting played on American radio stations and Wurld who has lived a large part of his life in the US describes the movement.”The movement is stronger, what is happening is like everyone is sharing the music with their peers that are not Africans, more clubs are playing the songs, so people are consuming the music in larger numbers. It is a beautiful time to be African, the likes of Wizkid, Davido and Mr Eazi have done an amazing job, but it takes a village, it takes more than two or three people to get the movement going, we have a lot to offer to the world and the music is one of them and people are ready to accept what we have to offer.”On the message he hopes to pass through his music”Authenticity in depth, lyrics, I want people to be liberated and feel like they can do anything when they listen to my music, it is a conversation and my goal is to add a different range to the conversation, I just want to add another layer to the amazing things people are doing.”My songs like ‘Show You Off’, ‘Trobul’, and recently ‘Contagious’ are all passing different conversations. My music is usually inspired by life experiences, being aware of my surroundings, I pay attention to people, I create from a very selfless mindstate, my goal is to make the song from someone else.So what brings him back to the motherland”I feel like I have been gone way too long, like Africa is my huge part of my support system and I don’t feel close enough, so it is important I make it back home. While I am here, my goal is to connect with some of the amazing Nigerian artists and work with them.”He list some of his favourite Nigerian artists, ”Brymo, I am a big fan of Tekno, Wiz, of course, Davido is awesome.” He narrates how he met Walshy Fire of Major LazerIn 2016, Wurld had his biggest break with the release of the song ‘Show You Off’, which features producer Shizzi and Walshy Fire, one part of the trio that makes up the international group, Major Lazer.”That song is special because Shizzi had the music already and I met with him through a friend of mine, Kingsley, and when he played me the record, I loved the Fela vibe in it, I created the record over like a week, I shared it with a friend of mine that knew Walshy Fire, he heard it, added some things and it was done. After the song was done, people around me were like this song has to go out and I paid attention to the energy of about 20 people around me and since it went out, it has been everywhere. On why it has taken five years for him to put together a second body of work, ”I have so much music to share and it is ready, ‘Evolution’ was a different space, that is my straight electronic space, that is me finding myself, right now, I have found myself and it takes time.I had to try different things and the greatest thing I have learnt is ‘staying true to yourself’, it is easier to fall into different things because it is cool.”He speaks on writing for R&B star MarioOutside being a songwriter and producer, he has also written songs for a number of other artists including R&B star, Mario.”I did, it was interesting, I was working with Mario on his last album with RCA records, the album never really came out, but one of the songs I actually wrote for him came out, a song called ‘Love, Sex, Drugs’, they actually leaked the record and we did like almost 8 songs on the project, I was part of the songwriting crew on the record.I have also worked with artists like Akon, BOB, Trinidad James, and a number of producers like Timbaland, just to name afew, those are like my neighbours in Atlanta, so they always come around to the studio there and I was always like behind the scenes as a songwriter. On his record deal and his song certified gold in Eastern Europe”I am with Universal, we have an amazing partnership, and I think it is an amazing time for the rest of the world to see what we are made of as Africans and our goal is to contribute to what is happening. In 2015, his song ‘Follow You’ alongside Polish disc jockey, DJ Gromee was certified Gold and he sees that as his biggest feat yet;”Yeah, my song went Gold, that was my very first major achievement, it was really big in the Eastern part of Europe like Denmark, Poland.I was working with DJ/producer Groomee, he played it for Sony Music in Poland, they loved the song, they wanted to sign me, but it didn’t feel alright for me signing in Poland, but he went ahead and the song went on to open doors for me.”On what to expect before the end of the year”Expect ‘Contagious’, ‘Trouble’ and so many collaborations, it has been constant work behind the scenes, ‘Show You Off’ is the first song from the ”Contagious” EP, the titled track is the second and more to come.” he concluded.

BBNaija 2019: Diane says introduction of new housemates is messing with her head

0

One housemate who can’t hide her reservations for Biggie’s plot twist is Diane and she is has been blunt about it.
The arrival of four additional housemates to the Big Brother house is already making some of the housemates uneasy.
Last night while some of the ladies gathered to chat, they expressed their mixed feelings over the new additions to the house. Diane, Mercy, and Esther who have formed a united front got talking about their new competition.
Diane started by talking about how she likes Venita Akpofure‘s acting skills, having seen some of her movies. Esther was quick to tell her not to be open with her admiration, to which Diane agreed.
Esther also said the new guys are short and light-skinned which was going to make it impossible for her to get attracted to any of them [MultiChoice]
Esther, on the other hand, said she doesn’t remember anything about Venita’s career. Diane then went on to say that she is trying to stop thinking about the new twist to the game after the introduction of the new housemates.

The Billionaire Experience: The night Teni became a ‘Makanaki’ of shows [Event Review]

0

What sold the show was its uncanny ability to convey excitement.
It was slated for a Monday and end on Tuesday morning. It was also slated to start at 6pm. Those right there, were two red flags. Nigerian shows don’t even begin sound check at 6 pm, let alone start shows. This writer was pessimistic.
The entire outlook is made worse by the headliner’s detailed performative deficiencies. Over the past one year, social media had criticized her performances and some had even slated her for ‘sexual harassment’ of men she calls on stage – that was over the top though. Which songs would she carry an entire set with? All these were valid questions.
Her name is Teni Makanaki. She is funny, witty and likeable. She is everybody’s darling girl in the industry. Some know her as ‘The Entertainer’ and others know her as ‘One Take GOD.’ Previously, she couldn’t perform, but by 12:00 am on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, she slayed her performative demons. She didn’t only give us a show, she made cynics nod in endorsement.

The show still didn’t start on time. The organization could have used a little bit of work, but that’s expected. No show is perfect, anyway. All that matters is that the show was a success and people went back home feeling they go their money’s worth – maybe giveaway ticket’s worth sha.
The show didn’t excel on excellent stage craft like a Simi can conjure with her energy and unique ability to turn the music into a party anthem. The show didn’t excel on Michael Jackson-esque swashbuckling dance routines. The show didn’t excel on Kendrick Lamar-esque performative symbolism either.
What sold the show was its uncanny ability to convey excitement. Whenever the energy felt like dropping, Teni had something in store to get people sentimental or short people climbing their seats. The show excelled in the ‘Teni way.’ All the promotional social media skits didn’t happen for naught.

Even what Twitter once brandished ‘sexual harassment’ was one of the biggest draws of the night. A certain tall guy named Bond – or by his government name, Ebube – became Teni’s lover for the night as her presumed ‘lover,’ Wizkid watched on in seeming excitement.
On a night that looked doomed to fail, Teni shone like a million stars. She came of age and the music was a vehicle for her growth.
At 12:03 in the morning, a voice began delivering panegyrics in Ondo dialect. Accompanied by beautiful women dressed as handmaidens, Teni made a regal entrance onto the stage. She wore a white agbada, bore a walking stick on her right hand and had a horse tail on the left. The first song she performed was ‘Uyo Meyo.’
She was backed up by a wonderful band that was in sync with her. She commanded like a drill sergeant and they obeyed like they had a guard room stint in the offing.

Presumably, the song got in her feels as she walked onto the stage to see her mother, sisters, secondary school friends and other members of her family seated in the front row. Telling a short story about how she thought she might never make it, she burst into the classic Yoruba Christian tune, ‘Ona Ara,’ to show her gratitude to God.
Then, she performed ‘Fargin’ and a song dedicated to Lagos. Soon after, she left the stage for new signees from her label, Dr. Dolor Entertainment. Some of those kids include Ryan, Hotkid, Nikita and so forth. The energy dropping when Shoddy The TurnUp King walked on stage for a 20-minute rage.

He took us to different eras with a DJ mix. The detail in Teni’s commendably began showing. First, before she performed a song dedicated to her dad, Olaosebikan Apata who passed away when she was just two-years-old, a Military band came on stage for a set. Teni’s dad was in the military. While performing that song dedicated to her dad, she wore his military uniform.

Something important happened as the military band was on stage; as they performed the Nigerian national anthem, Nigerians actually stood up and respected the country. But then again, the show was filled with IJGB people. She then performed ‘Case,’ during which she encountered Bond/Ebube.
Then came another moment of admirable detail. As she performed ‘Fake Jersey,’ her dope song that criminally sailed under the radar a year ago, a squad of freestyle footballers came on stage. Again, she took a break as Chuvano, Idahams, Blaqbonez, T-Classic, CKay and other upcoming acts performed. Around 1:29 am, Wizkid entered the venue.

At 1:46 am, Tiwa Savage came on stage. It was a curiously timed performance from Africa’s number one female act at another woman’s show. One wonders if that would have happened a few years ago. Did she grow or did she notice something important? Time will tell. Right after ‘Mama Jam Jam,’ Mayorkun came on stage to a roar as he performed ‘True.’

When Teni came back, she brought Ebube back on stage. Alas, he could sing – unlike Teni’s older sister who adorably made a valiant effort at singing. When Teni’s next break happened, Zlatan performed to the loudest roar of the evening. Then, Brodda Shaggi performed just before Reekado Banks made his entrance at 2:50 am.

Seven minutes later, a brilliant segue started. First, Skiibii joined Reekado Banks to perform their smash hit, ‘Sensima.’ Then, Skiibii was joined by Teni for ‘Daz How Star Do.’ Then, Falz came on stage to perform the third verse on the song before performing a string of his hits.
Joeboy at Teni's 'The Billionare Experience.' (Pulse Nigeria)Joeboy at Teni’s ‘The Billionare Experience.’ (Pulse Nigeria)
As he left the stage, Joeboy and Mr. Real performed before Teni rounded up with ‘Billionaire.’ The only meaningful critique of Teni’s performance is simple; she needs to learn how to give in and give people more her freestyle genius. A good performer knows when to abandon the song and just lead the band on a freestyle madness.
If anyone can do that, it’s Teni. A lot of time during last night’s show, Teni started those freestyle moments but didn’t allow them flourish either for reluctance or whatever else. Asides that, it was a great show. Here’s to the next one…

Kaffy says Naira Marley’s ‘Soapy dance’ is disgusting and she’s getting all the backing

0

Guinness World Record holder and dancer, Kaffy feels no dance is more immoral and disgusting as Naira Marley’s new dance, ‘Soapy.’
Kaffy has condemned the dance to Naira Marley’s song, ‘Soapy’ in strong terms.
Five days after Naira Marley pioneered the new dance step – which subtly dignifies masturbation – Kaffy has condemned it saying the dance trend should never be encouraged.
Kaffy is known to have set the trend and supported many Nigerian dances from Gala to Swo, Shoki, ShakuShaku and recently Zanku. The dancer had thrived on teaching young talents while also exhibiting her dancing skills in several music videos.
Kaffy says further in an Instagram post that in the history of the Nigerian dance, she hasn’t seen any as immoral and disgusting as the soapy dance, which is growing like a wildfire.
This is a No .
#myopinion
As dancers we should also speak for what is right we shouldn’t encourage this for the sake of trend. Esp when it’s not even censored away from kids ,as an adult sef it’s offensive. #rubbish
“Am sorry but I can’t take this. In the history of Naija dance, I have never seen a more disgusting immoral dance like the so-called Soapy. It should never be encouraged. Am really disappointed,” she posted.
It’s obvious Soapy isn’t working for the mother of two, who is also married to a drummer and choreographer. Her strong condemnation of the dance trend clearly is clearly indicated in her reasons.
She noted further in the caption of the Instagram post that though it’s her opinion, the Soapy dance should not be encouraged just for the sake of a new trend. Kaffy also points out the inability of the man behind the trend – Naira Marley – to censor the dance from kids.

Kaffy’s condemnation of the Soapy dance is gradually getting support from fellow entertainers, who shares her views.
Don Flexx has strongly condemned Naira Marley’s Soapy dance. [Instagram/DonFlexx]
Fellow dancer and choreographer, Don Flexx says he totally agrees with Kaffy’s take saying the illustration of the dance is immorally disheartening. “I totally concur with you, the signatory dance illustration is immorally disheartening and improper for commercial viewership and yet alone not safe for young viewership as well,” Don Flexx submitted.
Leading makeup artist, Lola Maja also made her submission saying decency isn’t a trend.
“My sister… If no lines are drawn what will be the next trend? Decency isn’t a trend,” Lola Maja says.

Singer, Nikki Laoye and Femi Branch also had their say while supporting Kaffy’s take on the dance.
Laoye simply referred to the new dance trend as a wank dance. “True… Totally off and watching ladies do it sef looks weird and ewww.. It’s a wank dance nah WTH.”
Nollywood star actor, Femi Branch is saddened that some celebrities are sharing the dance trend and help promoting the ‘immoral’ dance. “Well said Sis. Very soon, kids will start dancing it and then what? And some so-called celebs too are doing it and posting on their IG! Shame!!!”
Femi Branch says it’s a shame celebrities are promoting the soapy dance.
On Air-Personality and ‘Jenifa’s Diary’ actress, Lolo 1 also lend her voice to Kaffy’s position saying, “I loved you before I love you more now ..is it that we do not want this generation to thrive? why would we just destroy common sense.”
Naira Marley, however, is not slowing down in promoting his dance trend. On July 1, after Timi Dakolo’s wife, Busola opened up on how the lead pastor of COZA church raped her at the age of 16, Naira Marley took to his Instagram to further promote his dance while condemning rape.

Barely two months back, Naira Marley was engaged in a controversy after he tried making a case for internet fraudsters on Instagram. His take saw a strong condemnation from singer, Simi, and rapper, Ruggedman. The singer went ahead to release a hit single, ‘Am I a Yahoo Boy’ after which he was arrested and arraigned in court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for alleged involvement in internet fraud. He released a follow up single filled with lewd lyrics shortly before his release, ‘Opotoyi.’ The single is followed by ‘Inside Life’ chronicling his experience during his incarceration.
